Ross Granville Harrison (born January 13, 1870 in Germantown , Pennsylvania , † September 30, 1959 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American zoologist .

Harrison earned a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1889, and a Ph.D. there in 1894. in zoology and in 1899 at the University of Bonn a Dr. med. ; In 1896 he married Ida Lange in Altona and the couple had five children.

From 1896 he held a professorship in anatomy at Johns Hopkins University , from 1907 at Yale University a professorship in comparative anatomy and zoology and from 1927 he was Sterling Professor of Biology at Yale. In 1938 he retired and was head of the National Research Council from 1938 to 1946 . He remained scientifically active until shortly before his death.

Harrison is considered a pioneer in the development of cell culture . He has also made important contributions to embryology and carried out first experiments on organ transplantation . He founded the scientific journal Journal of Experimental Zoology and was its editor from 1903 to 1946.

Between 1913 and 1941, Ross was nominated 15 times for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine .
