The Rote Bach is an orographically right tributary of the Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 13.6 km.

River course

The Rote Bach rises within the Senne military training area west of the village of Oesterholz-Haustenbeck on the district of Schlangen and flows off in a south-westerly direction. Within the Senne landscape designated as a restricted area , the water initially enters the district of Bad Lippspringe and then forms the Bad Lippspringen city limit towards Paderborn , and then the Paderborn city limit towards Hövelhof . Before the stream finally enters the Paderborn area, it absorbs the Franzosenbach, which flows in from the right and thus also from the Senne .

Only after more than eight kilometers of flow does the Rote Bach leave the restricted area and pass under the federal motorway 33 at the Sennelager junction . After the approximately 13.5 hectare large Altensenner See in the west of Sennelager flows through, the stream turns towards the Paderborn district of Sande , crosses under the Boker-Heide-Kanal and flows into the Lippesee east of Sande after the right-hand absorption of the Gunne . Since the establishment of a flood, this reservoir is no longer dammed by the Lippe, but only by the tuna .

The Rote Bach overcomes a height difference of 75 meters during its flow section, resulting in an average bed gradient of 5.5 ‰.

Characteristic

The course of the Red Brook can be divided into three types of watercourse : From the source to shortly after the confluence of the Franzosenbach, the water is a sand- shaped lowland creek (type 14), and from there until it crosses under the A 33 as an organic creek (type 11) . From this point on, the brook counts as a small low-lying river in river and stream valleys (type 19), as the floodplain becomes increasingly wider up to its mouth .

In addition, the Rote Bach can be assigned to two fish regions: From the source to the crossing under the Köhlbrücke within the military training area, the water belongs to the "upper trout type lowland", from there to the mouth it belongs to the "lower trout type lowland".

Water quality

The structural quality of the waters of the Red Brook is mostly only moderately impaired within the Senne military training area. In the area of the source, only quality class V corresponding to a noticeable impairment can be achieved, but the structural quality improves quickly and in many areas reaches at least a moderate impairment (quality class III), in short sections even quality classes II (partially natural) and I (close to nature). The most significant damage within the Senne can be found in those places where the course of the water to some smaller ponds was dammed.

When you leave the restricted area, the structural quality of the Red Brook deteriorates significantly. From there to the confluence with the Lippesee, quality classes VI and VII are predominant, which corresponds to severe or excessive structural damage.
