The Rotterdam is a cruise ship that entered service in 1997 and is the flagship of the Holland America Line .

history

The Rotterdam was built at Fincantieri in Venice and undocked on December 21, 1996. The ship was delivered to Holland-America Line on November 7, 1997. She sailed under the flag of the Netherlands with her home port Rotterdam. It entered service in Barcelona on November 11, 1997 .

In April 2015 the ship was equipped with scrubbers at Blohm + Voss and received a new hull painting. The cabins have also been modernized.

In March 2020, the Rotterdam was parked to take healthy passengers from the sister ship Zaandam in the Pacific off the coast of Panama , on which several people were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Both ships arrived in Fort Lauderdale on April 2nd.

In July 2020 the sale of the Rotterdam and the sister ship Amsterdam to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines known in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic . The ships are to be taken over in September 2020 and renamed Borealis and Bolette . There they replace the Boudicca and the Black Watch .

The Rotterdam is mainly used in the Atlantic, in the North and Baltic Seas, in the Mediterranean and in the Caribbean.

Sister ships

The Rotterdam has three sister ships , the Amsterdam , the Volendam and the Zaandam . The ships form the Rotterdam class, also known as the R class. While the Volendam and the Zaandam are equally divided, both the Amsterdam and the Rotterdam have different deck layouts and instead of one two parallel chimneys.

Surname

Since it was founded in 1871, the shipping company has named ships Rotterdam several times . The five-star ship currently in operation was the sixth to receive this name in 1997.
