Roy Williamson (Bishop)

Robert Kerr "Roy" Williamson (born December 18, 1932 - September 17, 2019 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Bradford from 1984 to 1991 and Bishop of Southwark from 1991 to 1998 in the Church of England .

Williamson comes from a mixed denominational marriage. His father was a Protestant ; he was a shipyard worker on the docks in Belfast . His mother was a Catholic . He grew up in the St Donard's neighborhood in East Belfast . He attended the Elmgrove Public Elementary School in Belfast. At the age of 23 he came to London and worked there for six years as a Christian missionary ( City Missionary ) for the evangelical London City Missionary. He went to the Kingston Polytechnic in London . In preparation for the priesthood he studied theology at Oak Hill Theological College in Southgate , London. In 1962 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1963 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1962 to 1966 as vicar ( curate ) at the Crowborough Parish Church in Crowborough . In 1966 he became pastor ( Vicar ) at St. Paul's Church in the district of Hyson Green in Nottingham . From 1971 he was pastor at St Ann with Emmanuel Church, also in Nottingham. From 1978 to 1984 he was Archdeacon of Nottingham ( Archdeacon of Nottingham ). He was ordained a bishop in 1984 . In 1984, after the death of Geoffrey Paul in 1983, he became his successor and the 7th Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England. He held this church office until 1991. He was succeeded as Bishop of Bradford by David Smith . Williamson was then in 1991, succeeding Ronald Bowlby , Bishop of Southwark in the Church of England. He held this office until his retirement in January 1998. He was succeeded as Bishop of Southwark by Tom Butler .

Membership in the House of Lords

Williamson served as Ecclesiastical Lord of the House of Lords from April 1988 to October 1996 in his capacity as Bishop of Southwark .
