The name Rufus was originally a Roman cognom and later became a male given name .

Origin and meaning

Rufus is Latin for "the red".

In ancient times, cognomes were used to name people who either stood out for their red hair color or their reddish skin color or who came into contact with red soiling (tanners) at work. Later, however, the name was only used for red-haired people.

Rufus became a first name in post-ancient times.
