Run the jewels is an American hip-hop - Duo . It was founded in 2013 by the New York musician, producer and label founder El-P and the rapper from Atlanta, Killer Mike .

Band history

The two musicians met in 2011 through Jason DeMarco, a mutual friend on Adult Swim and the Cartoon Network . El-P was working on the album Cancer 4 Cure . The track Tougher Colder Killer was created together in the studio . Together they worked on Killer Mike's album RAP Music and then decided to continue their collaboration. Both albums were released at the same time and the two musicians went on tour together. Each of the two first played a 30-minute solo set, and then the two played a 30-minute performance together. After this successful tour, they founded the Run the Jewels project, which was initially marketed anti-commercial. The name is based on a line from LL Cool J's song Cheesy Rat Blues . The free album received good reviews in the alternative music press and was featured in numerous annual best lists. The self-titled debut album Run the Jewels was released on June 26, 2013 for free on the Internet. A version for sale followed in January 2014 via Fool's Gold, including on vinyl and CD.

The second album Run the Jewels 2 came out on October 24, 2014. Like its predecessor, the album was released as a free download. Nevertheless, a version for sale reached number 50 in the Billboard sales charts via Mass Appeal Records. In 2014, the two also financed a remix version via Kickstarter , which consists only of cat sounds and is said to be entitled Meow the Jewels . This should appear in 2015. The proceeds will benefit victims of police violence .

An appearance by the band on the evening of the jury's decision in the Michael Brown case was the subject of media reports in the USA. Run the Jewels performed in St. Louis , killer Mike criticized the decision in an emotional speech, spoke of his fear for his children and quoted Martin Luther King while El-P was crying in the background on the stage.

The third album Run the Jewels 3 was released on January 20, 2017 and has also been available for download since the end of December 2016.

On June 3, 2020, the duo released RTJ4 ( Run the Jewels 4 ) via download and music streaming . The album will also be released in physical form on September 18, 2020.

Music genre

Run the Jewels play hip-hop, which is less geared towards the general public than towards adult listeners. The Juice called the style of music "Grown Men Rap" . El-P's productions are rather gloomy and distorted and should appear flat in order to have as much space as possible for the two of them to rap together. The two of them take inspiration from hanging out together and from consuming alcohol and psychedelic drugs . The lyrics are cynical and contain peaks against mainstream American rap. Run the Jewels sees itself as a crew and sees itself as a continuation of well-known rap duos such as Eric B. & Rakim , EPMD or Mobb Deep . Bun B and TI , among others, could be won as feature guests , but also alternative rock musicians such as RATM singer Zack de la Rocha and Travis Barker (drummer of Blink-182 ).
