Ruth E. Carter (born April 10, 1960 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American costume designer .

Life

Carter first trained as a teacher at Hampton University in Virginia . After graduating, she did an internship at the Santa Fe Opera . While working as a costume designer at the Los Angeles Theater Center, she met Spike Lee . This was the beginning of a long collaboration; Lee used Carter as a costume designer in twelve of his feature films between 1988 and 2015, including Mo 'Better Blues and Oldboy . She was also in his pilot episode for the television series Shark . Carter was nominated for the 1993 Oscar for the first time for Malcolm X in the category Best Costume Design . She received a second nomination in 1998 for her work on Steven Spielberg's Amistad . Between 2001 and 2009 she was five Eddie Murphy - Comedies involved, starting with Dr. Dolittle 2 until home the magic is loose .

In the 2018 Marvel film Black Panther , she was responsible for the costume design and received her first Oscar in 2019 .
