biography

Semple learned to ski at the age of three and won his first race at the age of six. From the age of eleven he trained at the Mont-Tremblant Ski Club. He contested the first FIS races in December 1997 and individual starts in the Nor-Am Cup followed from February 1998 . From January 2000 he started regularly in the North American racing series and achieved his first podium in the slalom of Osler Bluff on March 9, 2000 . In the same year he was accepted into the Canadian national team.

On December 10, 2001 Semple made his World Cup debut in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio . However, he failed in the first round and did not achieve any countable result in his few other World Cup starts in the next few years. The next podium in the Nor-Am Cup he achieved on January 5, 2003 in the slalom of Sunday River , which he finished seventh in the 2002/03 season in the slalom classification. In February 2003 he took part in the World Championships in St. Moritz and was 34th in slalom, but failed in giant slalom. He celebrated his first victory in the Nor-Am Cup on January 5, 2004 in the giant slalom on Sunday River. With another podium the next day he reached third place in the giant slalom classification in the 2003/04 season .

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, Semple won his first World Cup points as the 25th of the Beaver Creek slalom . Two weeks later, on December 22nd, 2004, he achieved 16th place in the Flachau slalom, his best World Cup result for a long time. At the 2005 World Championships in Bormio , he reached 15th place in the giant slalom, but failed in the slalom. In the Nor-Am Cup he won the giant slalom ranking in the 2004/05 season without a win but with four second places and was fourth in the overall classification.

In the 2005/06 season Semple concentrated largely on the World Cup and started in the disciplines of slalom, giant slalom and super combination. However, due to many failures, he only achieved the points in three races. But he came to the team for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , where he failed both in the giant slalom and in the combination. From the next season on, Semple suffered from hip problems. In the World Cup he only started in the slalom and the super combination, but was only able to score in two super combinations. He finished the super combination of the 2007 World Cup in Åre in 19th position.

In April 2007 Semple underwent hip surgery, but had to take a two-month break in the 2008/09 season due to ongoing problems. In the winter of 2008/09 he was no longer part of the Canadian team due to a lack of good results and he had to do training and races at his own expense. Semple won two races in the Nor-Am Cup in the 2008/09 season and achieved second place in each of the slalom and super combination rankings with a further three podium places, making him a World Cup fixed starting place for the next season in these disciplines secured. These achievements were recognized by the Canadian Ski Association, but his return to the national team had to buy because he had already exceeded the age limit and had no World Cup points.

In the 2009/10 season Semple started again in the World Cup, although he only made it into the points twice, he achieved his best ever World Cup result with eleventh place in the combination of Kitzbühel . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he was the best Canadian in 15th place in the super combined. Also in 2011 Semple finished eleventh in the Kitzbühel Combined. A few days later, however, the 2010/11 season was over for him. During training for the World Cup descent in Chamonix , he suffered ligament injuries in his knee at the end of January. In the 2011/12 season, Semple again took part in Nor-Am and World Cup races until he had a serious fall on January 13, 2012 in the downhill of the super combined from Wengen . He then did not contest any more races and announced his retirement in October 2012.
