Sângeorz-Băi or Sîngeorz-Băi ( German  Sankt Georgen , Hungarian Oláhszentgyörgy ) is a town and a health resort in the Bistrița-Năsăud district in Romania .

location

Sângeorz-Băi is located in the Transylvania region on the Someșul Mare River . The city is located on the southern edge of the Romanian National Park Rodna Mountains . The place is connected to the Romanian road network with the state road Drum național 17D .

climate

The protected valley location at an altitude of 435 meters above sea level creates a subalpine climate. The average temperatures are 6.2 ° C in the annual mean, 18.2 ° C in July and −3.7 ° C in January. The annual mean rainfall is 802 mm. The air is rich in oxygen and enriched with natural suspended matter (pollen).

history

The Bistritz city archives have records and documents that document the history of the valley since 1245. The area was in the east of the Kingdom of Hungary and was developed economically in the 13th century by the influx of German settlers and miners. The incursion of Mongolian armies into Hungary and Poland in 1241 , known as the Tatar storm , was a major setback . In the following period, the area that later belonged to the Grand Duchy of Transylvania developed as a border district. The church had taken on an important part in the repopulation of the depopulated areas (place name Sankt Georgen ). Numerous church buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries can be found in the area and prove the importance of the monasteries. North to the city of Bistrita bordered Bistrita district , a special area that was subordinated with the approval of the Hungarian kings of the municipal administration and jurisdiction and therefore not a Hungarian county at this time ( county ) belonged. Rodna was the main town in this district, and the settlements surrounding it are only documented late by their own names. The place Sângeorz-Băi was first mentioned in 1432.

Szent Gorgy (1769–1773)

In the 18th century, the tensions, which were also caused by religious zealots and a changing composition of the population structure in the border region of the Grand Duchy of Transylvania, increased. The Habsburgs occupied the area and set up a military administration. May 10, 1763 became the day of the "grănicerilor năsăudeni" revolt . As an immediate reaction, the neighboring town of Năsăud was elevated to the status of a garrison site and seat of a border regiment, a decision that subsequently gave this place greater economic importance.

The administration of the Habsburg monarchy was interested in an economic development of this border region and arranged for a precise mapping of the national territory. A plan from the map collection Josephinische Landaufnahme shows the location with churches, mills, bridges, streets and alleys. The field name Sauer Brun marks a mineral spring just north of the village , which quickly led to the emergence of the health resort "Băile Hebe".

Mineral springs

town hall

The place currently has 20 mineral springs, nine of which are used as medicinal springs. A modern spa center, hotels and bathing establishments were built on the outskirts. They complement the spa facilities that have been in use since the 1950s. There are also public fountains distributed throughout the city, where water can be drawn free of charge. Due to the high content of suspended matter, the water from these mineral springs is cloudy, usually yellowish or brownish in color. The oldest source - Hebe - was first mentioned in 1770. The mineral water has therapeutic properties comparable to those of the springs in Vichy ( France ) or Karlsbad ( Czech Republic ) and has the highest calcium content in southeast Europe.
