Sébastien Squillaci (born August 11, 1980 in Toulon ) is a former French football player who was most recently under contract with SC Bastia .

Career

society

Squillaci's professional career began in the summer of 1997 at Sporting Toulon Var , where he only stayed for a year before signing a contract with AS Monaco . In the first two years, however, he could not really assert himself and was awarded to AC Ajaccio in Ligue 2 for two years in order to collect match practice . There he was able to develop further and made it back to the top French league with the club.

For the 2002/03 season he returned to AS Monaco, where he could play in the starting eleven. He remained loyal to the Monegasque until July 2006. During this time he was able to advance with the Monegasque in the UEFA Champions League to the final, but then they lost 3-0 to FC Porto in Gelsenkirchen . Squillaci came on in the 72nd minute for Gaël Givet .

From 2006 to 2008 the defender was under contract with Olympique Lyon . In the transfer, the Lyons exchanged Sylvain Monsoreau and transferred an extra 4.5 million euros to Monaco . Squillaci was a top performer in Lyon and won the French championship with the team in 2007 and 2008 and the Trophée des Champions in 2006 and 2007 . His contract was dated until June 30, 2010, for the 2008/09 season he moved to Spain, to Sevilla FC . After the defensive player had become a regular player in the first year, he lost his place the following season and was often just a spectator. The FCS reached the final of the Copa del Rey at the end of the season . In the final on May 13, 2010 against Atlético Madrid coach Antonio Álvarez let him appear in the starting line-up. The match was won 2-0.

At the beginning of the new season, Squaillaci drew attention when he refused to play for Sevilla in the Champions League qualification against Sporting Braga in order to provoke a clearance for a change. Shortly afterwards it was announced that he would move to England, to Arsenal FC . Since he did not play against Braga for Sevilla, he was still available for Arsenal in the Champions League. In London he replaced the emigrated William Gallas . After the end of the 2012/13 season , his expiring contract with the "Gunners" was not extended.

Squillaci then moved to SC Bastia on a free transfer. In Bastia, Squillaci quickly became a regular in central defense. Squillaci was also able to celebrate some successes with SC Bastia, for example they were able to advance to the final in the Coupe de la Ligue 2015. In the 2016/2017 season, Squillaci was injured on matchday 10 against FCO Dijon and was unable to return to the team until the end of the season. Together with SC Bastia , he was relegated from last place in Ligue 2 .

He ended his career on August 19, 2017.

National team

By performing well at Monaco, Squillaci played his way into the extended squad of the French national team . He made his debut in 2004. With his move to Lyon, he moved further into the field of vision of Les Bleus and was hoping for a nomination for the 2006 World Cup . But with the comeback of Lilian Thuram, there was no longer a place for the central defender in the French squad. At the European Championship finals in 2008 , he was part of the French squad , but was not used in any game. Two years later he was again in the French squad at the World Cup in South Africa . He made his World Cup debut in the last group game against hosts South Africa when coach Raymond Domenech called him up alongside William Gallas in the team's starting line-up. He replaced Éric Abidal , who asked Domenech not to have to play before the start of the game. France lost 1: 2 and were eliminated from the tournament.
