Susan Eloise Hinton (born July 22, 1948 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) is an American writer .

Life

Hinton has written several award-winning novels for teenagers since the 1960s. The 19-year-old became famous with her first film Die Outsider , published in 1967, and was considered the voice of youth . In 1971, Jetzt und hier , 1975 followed the novel Rumble Fish , which, like The Outsider , served as a template for films by Francis Ford Coppola in the early 1980s , in which many actors of the so-called Brat-Pack generation started their careers. Matt Dillon played the lead role in Rumble Fish and also in the film adaptation of Tex . In the first three film adaptations of her books, Hinton herself was seen in smaller roles, for example she played a nurse in The Outsider . To Rumble Fish also wrote the screenplay .

In 1988, Hinton received the American Library Association's first Margaret A. Edwards Award for great service in youth literature .

Some works were newly translated by the youth writer Andreas Steinhöfel , the older translations are usually by Hans-Georg Noack .

The books often deal with the problems of the socially disadvantaged youth in Hinton's birthplace Tulsa. Their heroes are usually young people from the lower classes who have to assert themselves socially despite an often difficult family environment.
