When his father received an engagement at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1928 , the family moved to Neukölln and around 1935 to Königsberg in East Prussia . After graduating from high school, Fischer was in the Reich Labor Service and then as a Wehrmacht soldier in the front line in the Soviet Union. After the war, Fischer lived in Staßfurt , where the family had fled. He began studying German , history , art history and theater studies , first at the Humboldt University in Berlin and later in Heidelberg . At the Free University of Berlin he finally completed his academic training with a doctorate on the subject: The inclusion of naturalistic theater in the German magazine press (1887-1893) as Dr. phil. 1953.

As a student, Fischer wrote small articles for the “Königsberger Allgemeine Zeitung”. In Berlin, after completing his studies, he initially wrote as a local editor for the “Neue Zeitung”, wrote theater reviews and articles for the “Schweizer Monatshefte”, and also worked for the radio. As a journalist, for example, he interviewed Shirley MacLaine .

  • The power of conscience. From Socrates to Sophie Scholl
  • About god and gold. Columbus discovers a new world
  • Alexander the dream of peace between peoples. such as
  • Charlemagne. The first European

"What Fischer-Fabian writes is ingenious, knowledgeable and has a reflective historical sensus."

- Peter Wapnewski : Blurb You changed the world. Pictures of life from German history

"But at least the attempt, the result of which Fischer-Fabian presents, cannot convince."

- Eckart Mensching : Caesar and the Germanic peoples in the 20th century. Remarks on the afterlife of the Bellum Gallicum in German-language texts . Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Göttingen 1980, p. 61

- Library and information . Association of Librarians at Public Libraries . Volume 33, 1981, p. 974

"This is how Fischer-Fabian confuses Franz Mehring , the historian of the labor movement and Marx biographer, with Walter Mehring , the writer"
