The SBB RABe 501 is a 200 meter long elfteiliger articulated the SBB from Stadler Rail .

The manufacturer of the train is called Stadler SMILE (for S chneller M ehrsystemfähiger I NNOVATIVE L judges E xpresszug, to 2017 Stadler EC250 ); at the SBB the train was nicknamed Giruno (derived from the Romansh girùn for " buzzard ").

Tender

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) had in 2012 under the project name "BeNe" ( Be creation Ne ue international trains) announced a total of 29 trains for north-south traffic. The trains should be single-decker and not be equipped with tilting technology, in contrast to the vehicles for east-west traffic, for which the SBB ordered the Twindexx Swiss Express from Bombardier Transportation in 2010 . In addition to the established manufacturers of long-distance trains Alstom Transport, Siemens Rail Systems and Patentes Talgo , the Swiss manufacturer Stadler also took part in the tender. Stadler successfully built regional trains, but the only long-distance products that it could show were modified regional trains that had been delivered to Austria and Norway. When developing the train, Stadler Rail used components from previous vehicle families. After none of the providers were able to meet the necessary requirements, a second round of tenders was started, in which Siemens no longer participated. On May 9, 2014 it was announced that the SBB had selected the SMILE for 980 million francs. There is also an option to purchase 92 additional compositions. Stadler Rail was able to prevail against competing offers from Alstom and Talgo.

However, both competitors objected to the award, which is why SBB was initially not allowed to sign the contract with Stadler. Alstom withdrew its objection in September 2014, but the award of the order remained blocked until the Federal Administrative Court issued an interim decision in October 2014 in which Talgo's complaint was classified as "largely obviously unfounded" and therefore enabled the contract to be awarded. The contracts between SBB and Stadler Rail were signed on October 30th. Talgo had complained that Stadler Rail's offer, which was more expensive than its own, had been viewed by SBB as the most economically advantageous. The court countered that not only the acquisition costs but also the future costs can be included in the invoice.

Since 2015, the SBB has been running the project under the name “Giruno” (derived from the Romansh girùn for “ buzzard ”).

commitment

The new trains have been in operation in Switzerland since 2019, first between Zurich Airport and Basel, from the end of 2019 to Chiasso and probably from spring 2020 on to Milan. On the Gotthard , the trains will in the long term replace the ICN and ETR 610 tilting trains, which will then be used on winding routes such as the southern Jura foot line. The SMILE should also be approved in Germany and Austria.

Commissioning

At Innotrans 2016, Stadler presented the new Giruno Eurocity train in the form of a five-part short train in the presence of the CEO of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), Andreas Meyer , and Peter Spuhler , Group CEO and owner of Stadler . The first fully completed 11-part train has been tested since April 2017 and could be regularly observed near Stadler's commissioning center in Erlen. The festive roll-out took place on May 18, 2017 in Bussnang in the presence of Federal President Doris Leuthard . On July 12, 2017, a second eleven-car train made its first outings. To ensure that the maximum speed of 250 km / h can be met, test drives at up to 275 km / h (+ 10% of 250 km / h) were carried out between Hanover and Göttingen and over Easter in the Gotthard base tunnel ) successfully carried out.

On April 4, 2019, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) issued Stadler's new SMILE high-speed train, called Giruno by SBB, an operating license for 200 km / h in single traction on the Swiss network. The first commercial trip between Zurich HB and Erstfeld took place on May 8, 2019. Since the middle of May 2019, it has been used regularly on individual routes to gain operational experience on the home network. At the beginning, this is mainly from Basel SBB to Zurich Airport and back, as the SBB has selected its workshop in Basel as a maintenance base.

Since December 2019 the train has been running according to the schedule through the Gotthard Base Tunnel and connects Basel / Zurich with Chiasso and Lugano; It is also planned to travel to Italy to Milan from spring 2020.

vehicles

According to the original order, the fleet was to consist of two variants: 19 trains with a dining car (type 1) and 10 trains without a dining car, but with an additional second-class car (type 2). At the beginning of 2015, the SBB decided to order all 29 trains with dining cars so that there would be no more differences within the fleet. The wagons are connected to Jakobs bogies . The SMILE will have two entrances on each side of 550 mm ( platform height in Switzerland, Italy, Austria and partly in Germany), on the cars in front of and behind the dining car . In addition, there will be an entry at 760 mm in the middle of all cars on each side (long-distance platform height in Germany).

Due to the low entry height, the cars do not have a uniform floor level: the seats are arranged on platforms at both ends of the car, above the bogies. The central aisle rises to the car crossing with ramps. In contrast to the previous SBB EuroCity passenger carriages, the Giruno also has rows of seats in both car classes. These seats have folding tables in the front seat. However, the majority of the seats are still arranged opposite one another. In 2nd class, only the window seats in the face-to-face seating groups have tables, in 1st class there is a large shared table for each seating area.

The SMILE has multifunctional and bicycle compartments. Wheelchair spaces and the handicapped accessible toilets can be found in both car classes. The remaining toilet areas are divided into three cubicles each: a unisex toilet, a toilet reserved for women and a urinal cubicle.

A first shortened train was shown at InnoTrans in Berlin from September 20, 2016.

Train baptisms

RABe 501 006 at Basel SBB train station

On August 8, 2019 the first train 501,003 in Bellinzona in the name of San Gottardo baptized.

On August 31, 2019, the first train was given a canton's coat of arms. The 501 007 received the coat of arms of the canton Uri in Erstfeld . On September 26, 2019, 501 011 was christened Thurgau . On November 23, 2019, 501 009 was christened “Zurich”. On December 15, 501 008 was christened Ceneri 2020 to advertise the opening of the Ceneri base tunnel .

The remaining trains will be named Ceneri , Simplon and the names of the 26 cantons . Contrary to the earlier intention, the canton's coats of arms are not assigned according to the Ae 6/6 numbers , but according to the availability of the vehicles. The coats of arms are placed under the side windows of the driver's cab and in the dining car.

criticism

Stadler Rail describes the SMILE as the "world's first single-story low-floor high-speed train", but this only refers to the possibility of step-free entry at the standard platform heights in the area of operation (55 cm and 76 cm above the top of the rails). On the other hand, there are already low-floor high-speed trains (e.g. Talgo 250 and 350 ) with a continuous floor height of 760 mm. In contrast to these, with the SMILE ramps or stairs have to be overcome in order to reach the floor height of 940 mm or 1200 mm (above the bogies).
