The 1955/56 season was the 25th season of the Finnish SM-sarja . TPS Turku became champions for the first time in the club's history . HIFK Helsinki and KyPa Karhula were relegated to the 2nd division.

The main round was held in two groups of five teams each. The first two in the group qualified for the championship final. The two runners-up met in the game for third place. The last placed in each group were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
