Founded it was the same adventure / strategy role-playing game with dating sim trains , in 1996 for the Japanese Sega Saturn - game console appeared. Since then, in addition to adaptations for other gaming platforms in Japan, several sequels, prequels , side stories and offshoots have appeared . There are also adaptations as light novels , manga and anime and for the theater. It belongs to the genre of steampunk .

action

The original plot was inspired by the Shochiku Revue and the Takarazuka Revue .

The action of Sakura Taisen is set in an alternative universe in Japan at the time of the Taishō period around 1920 in Tokyo . In this universe there was the so-called "Kouma War" in which a huge demon appeared in Nihonbashi in Tokyo, which the anti-demon team of the Imperial Army was able to banish successfully, but with high losses. Since then, the few young women who are qualified to control the steam-powered, house-high combat robots have been on standby against the renewed threat. These women are disguised as female theater groups in the style of the Takarazuka revue (Japanese: Takarazuka kagekidan ).

The series begins with the adventures of the Imperial Response Force ( 帝國 華 撃 團 / 帝国華 撃 団 , teikoku kagekidan ) known as the Flower Group ( 花 組 , hanagumi ), led by the newly graduated ensign in the Imperial Navy . He was also assigned to this troop because he also has the ability to control the steam-powered combat robots. He is an exception, because it was previously assumed that only women had the high spiritual strength required for this.

The strategy role-playing game uses a simulation-based story system. The game, like any other role-playing game, has a basic storyline, but the player's fate is not determined. Character interaction plays an important role, so it dramatically affects the story and the outcome of the game. If the player maintains relationships between certain characters, their performance in combat and the strength of their attacks increase. This means that the social elements of the game are closely related to the combat system.

The story of the main games has an episodic character, with each episode having its own eye-catcher and a preview of the next episode, which mimics the feeling of watching a Japanese anime. The eye-catchers are the only possibility for the player to correctly follow and save the progress of the game. They are also often used to show the transition between the two main game modes, but this is not always the case.

So far, almost all games, i.e. four out of five games in the main story, a further eight games (consisting of pre- and side stories) and eight other offshoot games, have only been published in Japan. Only the fifth part, Sakura Taisen V (English Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love ), has been released in North America and Europe.

Originally developed for the Sega Saturn, the game was repeatedly adapted and ported to newer console systems such as Dreamcast , PlayStation 2 (PS2), PlayStation Portable and Microsoft Windows.

Sakura Taisen

The port for the PS2 from 2003 was named Sakura Taisen - Atsuki Chishio ni ( サ ク ラ 大 戦 〜 熱 き 血 潮 に 〜 ). The subtitle ( Atsuki Chishio ni , dt. "Boiling blood") refers to Tanka 26 in Akiko Yosano's collection Midaregami :

Game mechanics

Adventure mode

During adventure mode, the player controls the male squadron leader of the reaction force on which the game is focused. By visiting specific locations within the building or town, he can interact with different characters through the system known as the Live Interactive Picture System (LIPS) . LIPS presents options to the player during conversations to choose from. If decisions have been made, including the option not to choose anything, these are added to so-called "trust points" with the interacted character. These points have different effects during the game. Among other things, they shape the relationships between the player and the characters and determine the outcome of the game.

Battle mode

In the first two games, the combat mode is comparable to that of a tactical role-playing game . The player gives orders to all fighter pilots in a square grid. The commands are sorted into groups and only two of different groups can be obeyed per round. Since then it has evolved into a gridless action point based combat system known as the Active and Real-time Machine System (ARMS) . In ARMS, a unit can move as far and attack as often as it has action points, but some orders are still limited.

A character's trust points also affect group status during combat. A unit that has a pilot with more confidence points will perform better and vice versa. If a team member's unit is destroyed during combat, it is removed from the battlefield and the pilot loses trust points to the player. If the player's unit is destroyed or the player fails to meet the requirements, the game is lost.

Light novels

Between 1997 and 2005, six different light novels or series in a total of 13 volumes were published in Japan by the authors Satoru Akahori ( あ か ほ り さ mit ) once with illustrations by Hidenori Matsubara and Hiroyuki Kawasaki ( 川 崎 ヒ ロ ユ キ ).

The first three-volume light novel series Sakura Taisen Zen'ya under the editorial direction of Red Entertainment Corporation (then Red Company, レ ッ ド カ ン パ ニ ー ) written by Satoru Akahori and illustrated by Hidenori Matsubara and the script for Ai Yueni - Sakura Taisen Kayō Show ( 愛 ゆ え に - サ ク ラ 大 戦 歌 謡 シ ョ ウ ) by Hiroi Ōji and Naoki Nagashima ( 永島 直樹 ) were published by Media Works ' Dengeki Bunko ( 電 撃 文庫 ). All other books were published by Fujimi Shobo's Fujimi Fantasia Bunko ( 富士 見 フ ァ ン タ ジ ア 文庫 ).
