Sally Barker (born September 19, 1959 in Barrow upon Soar , Leicestershire ) is an English singer and songwriter in the field of folk rock , known for her work as a solo artist and founding member of The Poozies .

Musical career

At the age of 10, Sally Barker began writing songs and making music (guitar), inspired by television appearances by English folk - pop singer Mary Hopkin and influenced by Bessie Smith , Bonnie Raitt , John Martyn and Aretha Franklin .

Sally made her first appearances as the "better half" of the folk- blues duo Sally and Chris with bassist Chris Watson in pubs and clubs in the English Midlands , followed by guest appearances at Steeleye Span and Gordon Giltrap .

In 1986 Sally Barker won the Kendal Songsearch Competition and toured with well-known artists such as Fairport Convention , Taj Mahal , Richard Thompson and Roy Harper .

Her first solo album - Sally Barker (1989) - with cover versions of her previous live appearances was successful. This Rhythm Is Mine (1990) proved her constantly evolving musical potential, and so she toured with Bob Dylan and Robert Plant in Germany, after which her first two albums were released in 1990 by the Rykodisc label in the USA.

The Poozies (1990-1996)

In 1990 Sally Barker was a founding member of The Poozies , along with

  • Mary MacMaster - Electric-harp , metal-strung harp, percussion , vocals (formerly as Duo Sìleas ),
  • Patsy Seddon - Electro-harp, gut-strung harp, fiddle , percussion, vocals (formerly as Duo Sìleas ) and
  • Karen Tweed - piano accordion , percussion, vocals,

which she met at the Hong Kong Folk Festival and was able to inspire her as guest musicians for her second album.

Jenny Gardner (fiddle) soon left the group, and Eilidh Shaw (guitar, fiddle, percussion, vocals) joined the group in the late 1990s.

The Poozies played a mix of Cajun , Folk, Blues, Country and Rock, and released two albums with Sally Barker, Chantoozies (1993) and Dansoozies (1995).

The Poozies were described as “UK's finest all-female outfit” and “Britain's premiere celtic roots all-woman supergroup”.

1996 until today

From 1996 Sally Barker devoted herself more to her family (she has two sons), and Kate Rusby replaced her at The Poozies.

Sally has since concentrated on her solo work again - Favorite Dish followed in the same year and Passion and The Countess in 1998 .

She also appeared more and more as a guest musician, interrupted in 2002 by a sore throat and removal of her tonsils: she composed Misunderstood for the CD The World Is A Wonderful Place: The Songs Of Richard Thompson (1994), with the duo Show of Hands on Live at the Royal Albert Hall (1996), Pete Mortons Courage, Love and Grace (1997) and with Janet Russell on Gathering the Fragments (1998).

Her album Maid in England (2003), which Sally had worked on for five years, was overshadowed by the death of her husband, who had failed to recover from another cancer outbreak in August 2003.

In the fall of 2006, she toured reunited with The Poozies in a few appearances when she replaced Eilidh Shaw during the birth of her daughter in August 2006.
