Samba Festival Coburg
The Coburg International Samba Festival is a samba festival that has been taking place in the Upper Franconian city of Coburg since 1992 . It is the largest event of its kind outside of Brazil , the stronghold of samba dance and samba music . It is privately organized and took place for the first time in 1992 with 20 groups from Germany and abroad, two years later there were already 40 groups with 1,000 active participants. There are now around 100 groups with around 3,000 active participants. Every year around 200,000 visitors come.
procedure
The festival takes place annually on the second weekend in July. On Friday evenings and from Saturday morning onwards, various music groups appear simultaneously on around ten stages. On Saturday evening, the city center is transformed into a party with samba rhythms until late at night. Many of the samba groups present not only appear on the official stages at the designated times, but also move through the streets and alleys of the old town , making music , where they are usually surrounded by many listeners and fellow dancers. In addition to the open-air performances, there are also events and parties e.g. B. in the Morizkirche , in the congress house or in the Angerturnhalle. On Sunday, the festival begins with an open-air samba service and culminates in the large parade that moves through the city towards the stage on Schlossplatz.
The supporting program includes various workshops, children's programs, beauty contests, etc. In the city center, numerous market stalls are set up where food, drinks, clothing, jewelry and the like are offered.
The musicians are selected in an application process by the event company Sambaco-GmbH. Apart from the main acts, the samba groups that perform do not receive any fees or reimbursement of expenses. However, they will be provided with tent sites and rooms in schools for overnight stays, as well as food in a supply tent on the castle square.
The open-air venues for the samba groups are at Schlossplatz, Marktplatz, Albertsplatz, Prinzengarten, Hofgarten, Salzmarkt, Wein-Oertel and Mauer.
history
The idea of organizing a samba festival in Coburg goes back to the actor and musician Michael Häfner , who came to the city through his involvement at the Coburg State Theater. He had traveled to South America and completed his training at the International School of Percussion in Munich, where he became acquainted with the Brazilian samba. In Coburg, Häfner initially met with skepticism. Then Häfner found support for his idea from Coburg's Lord Mayor Norbert Kastner and from Frank Rebhan, Kastner's office manager. HUK-Coburg provided financial support until 1997 . From July 17 to 19, 1992, the first Samba Festival took place in Coburg - mostly on a voluntary basis - for which 250 artists from 18 different Samba schools also gathered unexpected 30,000 guests in the city. Every year the Queen of Samba comes from Rio de Janeiro. The number of visitors soon stabilized at around 200,000 a year. Around 3000 musicians appear in around 100 different groups every year.
