San Andrés (Calvera)
The Catholic parish church of San Andrés in Calvera , a district of the municipality of Beranuy (formerly Veracruz) in the province of Huesca in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Aragón , is a Romanesque church that was built in three phases. In the early 11th century, the lower part of the apse and the north wall of the nave were built by Lombard builders , the remaining walls were raised towards the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. The interior was vaulted in the middle of the 13th century. The tower dates from the early 20th century. The church is dedicated to the apostle Andrew .
architecture
Exterior construction
The church is built from carefully hewn house stones arranged in regular rows . On the north side of the west facade stands the bell tower, whose two-story square substructure carries an octagonal structure with two stories as well. The tower is covered by an eight-sided pointed helmet. The bell storey is broken through on four sides by large, arched openings. As an inscription on the north side of the tower shows, it was erected in 1907. Since the construction of the tower, through which the original portal was no longer accessible, the entrance has been located next to the tower on the north side of the nave , integrated into a small porch. In the Baroque period , a chapel was added to the north and south of the nave to the west of the choir . The outer walls of the apse were originally decorated with seven pilaster strips , of which only remnants have survived. An arched window framed by an archivolt has been cut into the east wall of the apse .
inner space
The interior consists of a single ship with five yokes and a rectangular choir with a semicircular apse. The nave is vaulted by a pointed barrel reinforced with belt arches . The walls are structured by pilasters with simple transom plates on which the belt arches of the vault rest. An equally unadorned cornice runs at the height of the battlements , which is also continued in the choir and the apse. The north side of the nave is decorated with arcades . The two transept-like chapels are covered by barrel vaults.
portal
The original portal in the western yoke of the nave is now the entrance to the sacristy , which is located on the ground floor of the tower. It is covered by a round arch that rests on a lintel .
Furnishing
In the church there is a rectangular baptismal font carved in stone , similar to that in the former monastery church of Santa María de Obarra .
