history

According to legend, the San Luis Rey Mission community was robbed by a small group of Indians in the late 18th century . During the persecution of the fleeing Indians, the then ruling Spaniards came through a fertile valley, which in 1797 was named Los Vallecitos de San Marcos ; in honor of April 25th (St. Mark's Day), the day of discovery.

On April 22, 1840, the then governor Juan B. Alvarado transferred the ranch Vallecitos de San Marcos to his relative, Jose María Alvarado. He died in the Pauma massacre and left the land to his wife, who then sold it to Lorenzo Soto . Soto, in turn, sold the land to Cave Couts and his family in the late 1850s .

In 1886, Gustavus French Merriam, a major from Topeka, Kansas who served in the defense of Washington, DC during the American Civil War , was given an area of approximately 0.65 square kilometers, on which he established the first permanent settlement in the area . He named the small valley in which his settlement was located, Twin Oaks, and began producing wine and honey. Shortly afterwards the first German and Dutch immigrants settled here.

In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad announced that it would build a railway line through the valley, but to the disappointment of the residents at a distance of 1.6 kilometers from the city center.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, San Marcos' economy was dominated by agriculture. In the middle of the 20th century, dairies and poultry farms settled in the city.

From 1956, San Marcos experienced a phase of growth when water from the Colorado River first reached the city, so that the population quickly grew to 2,500 people. In the 1970s, San Marcos flourished as the third fastest growing city in the state, with a population of 17,479 in 1980. Growth continued in the decades that followed, with the population rising from 33,800 (1990) and 82,743 (2000) to 83,781 (2010) residents.
