history

A predecessor to today's church was built on the same site in the 1350s. At the instigation of King Magnus Eriksson and with the consent of Pope Clement VI. a funeral chapel of St. Maria Magdalena was built. On an old copper engraving , the chapel can be recognized as a single-nave brick church with a square steeple with a high, pointed tower roof. In 1522 the church was the battle scene during the War of Liberation under King Gustav I Wasa . 500 Swedish soldiers, led by Peder Fredag, hid in the chapel and surprisingly attacked from hiding. In 1527 Gustav Wasa ordered the chapel to be demolished, possibly for military tactical reasons.

Under Johann III. However, in 1588 the construction of a new church began on the foundations of the former chapel. With the death of Johann III. in 1592 construction came to a standstill again. The church was consecrated in 1634. Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and later his son Nicodemus Tessin the Younger expanded the building in the Baroque style . This is how the church received its slender spire in 1676.

On July 19, 1759, there was a devastating fire in the city, which also severely damaged the church. Among other things, the church bells fell from the tower. Some items of equipment could be saved. After the reconstruction, the church was consecrated again on May 23, 1763. Its appearance today largely corresponds to the situation after the reconstruction. The main portal of the church is on the west side. The last restoration of the interior of the church took place in 1927 under the direction of Lars Israel Wahlman . In that year the organ created by Åkerman and Lund was also created . A second organ was built in 1986 by S. Magnusson.

Furnishing

The altarpiece of the church shows the motif of the Adoration of the Shepherds and was created around 1800 by Louis Masreliez . An original altarpiece had been sold before the fire and was therefore preserved. It is located in Piteå Church . The pulpit was built in 1763 in the Rococo style . At its front is a medallion showing Maria Magdalena . Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz created the organ front in 1774, also in the Rococo style. The baptismal font dates from 1638. The oldest inventory item is a brass baptismal font from the 16th century.

In the church there is a memorial plaque for Johan von Hoorn , the founder of the Swedish midwifery training. Another plaque commemorates Carl Michael Bellman , whose grandfather Michael Hermonius was pastor at the church.

graveyard

Several well-known personalities are buried in the church cemetery and in the church. The singer and poet Evert Taube and his wife, the sculptor Astri Taube , found their final resting place here; also the artists Hilding Linnqvist and Erik Höglund and the poets Lasse Lucidor , Johan Runius , Erik Johan Stagnelius , Werner Aspenström and Karl August Nicander .
