Nikolaikirche

The Sankt-Nikolai-Kirche is a three-aisled brick church in Luckau . It is one of the most important Gothic hall churches in Brandenburg and belongs to the evangelical church district of Niederlausitz .

history

A first documentary mention of a Nikolai and Marienkirche in Luckau comes from the year 1291. However, only the western portal consisting of a pointed arch and the tower substructure made of granite ashlars remained from this time . The construction of the then nave was finished in the middle of the 14th century, but was replaced in the same century by a three-aisled nave with five bays . The west towers were now also made of brick , only the granite base remained.

After 1375, extensive renovations took place again. A sacristy was built on the northern side . In particular, however, the nave was extended by four bays to the east. The nave was given a three-sided choir closure, the side aisles were led around the choir, with the ambulatory being closed on five sides.

The west gable of the church was built in the 15th century. In addition, the building was given a steep gable roof . There was a vault with pear sticks . A chapel was built on the northern side, which was increased to two floors after a fire in 1477. The connection of the buttresses protruding outwards resulted in four more small chapels on the south side of the building.

In 1644 there was another fire in which the church building suffered severe damage and in particular the original medieval furnishings were lost. The reconstruction of the church began in 1656 and lasted until 1770. The south tower, which collapsed in the fire, was rebuilt by Christian Bärgt . The master bricklayer Hans Petzsch from Korbitz installed simple cross vaults in the central eastern part of the building in 1670 . To complete the interior, the church was plastered and whitewashed.

At the choir portal there are Wetzrillen (Pestrillen) and bowls .

In December 2005, the Nikolaikirche was named “Monument of the Month” by the “Cities with Historic Town Centers” working group .

In the choir of the church there is an altarpiece made in 1670 . It was made by the cabinet maker Abraham Jäger based in Doberlug . The painting comes from Christoph Krause from Großenhain . Abraham Jäger also created the wooden baptismal font, which is located in the middle of the choir.

Andreas Schultze from Torgau created the gilded pulpit as his main artistic work from 1664 to 1666 . Christian Mätschke from Leipzig took over the frame and gilding of the pulpit . While the stairs to the pulpit, the girders and the pulpit basket were made of sandstone , the pulpit door and the sound cover were made of wood.

In the church there are also various epitaphs and tombs from the period between 1750 and 1850. In the side aisles there are galleries with boxes .

The organ on the western gallery is particularly impressive . It was built in 1672 and 1673 by the Leipzig organ builder Christoph Donat and is one of the most important historical organs in Brandenburg. Christian Mätzschke probably created the prospectus . In 1873 the instrument was rebuilt and from 1959 to 1977 it was reconstructed, restored and extended by Schuke Orgelbau .

The organ has mechanical elements that come into action when it is played. Angels bring trumpets to the mouth, the sun and moon begin to rotate. The slider chest instrument has 44 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The actions are mechanical.
