Andreas Schultze
Andreas Schultze (* around 1600 in Calau ; † around 1670) was a Torgau sculptor at the transition from early baroque to high baroque .
Life
Andreas Schultze was born between 1590 and 1610 in Calau in Niederlausitz . His birth and death dates are not known because the relevant documents are missing. Schultze probably completed his sculpting apprenticeship with Samuel Hanauer in Strehla . There is documentary evidence of Schultze's workshop in the Torgau baker's quarter from 1642.
Sculptural works by Schultze are proven and preserved in churches in Lower Lusatia and Saxony . Schultze worked as a wood sculptor , but also created important works from sandstone or combined materials (for example alabaster ). His sandstone pulpits, for example, usually have sound covers made of wood by him . A typical feature of Schultze's work are angel figures, the wings of which have a peculiar stylized shape of curled feathers.
Schultze's most extensive work is the 11 meter high altar in the upper church of St. Nikolai in Cottbus , which was walled up to protect it from destruction in 1945. The parts of the altar damaged during the war were rebuilt or restored by 1965. The altar is one of the most important Cottbus cultural monuments.
Another important work is the pulpit of the St. Nikolai Church in Luckau . The pulpit is supported by two figures, its staircase is richly decorated and the magnificent sound cover has a star-shaped floor plan . The work on the pulpit threatened to ruin the sculptor, as the agreed payments were not made, but he had costs for materials, transport and journeyman . He was briefly imprisoned in Torgau and forced to continue the work anyway. The pulpit was painted or gilded in 1681 by Christian Mätzschke from Leipzig.
The last written document about Andreas Schultze is a passport application from one of his apprentices, which he submitted in 1668.
