About this picture

Sanma is a province in the northwest of the South Pacific island state of Vanuatu . The region consists of the island of Espiritu Santo , with 3955.5 km² the largest island of Vanuatus, the smaller island of Malo and some islets east of Espiritu Santo. The province borders in the north on the province of Torba , which also belongs to Vanuatu , in the east on Penama and in the south on Malampa .

As with all (of the total of six) provinces of Vanuatu, the name Sanma is derived from the names of the main islands or groups of islands in the region, here from (Espiritu) San to and Ma lo.

Around 52,800 people live in the province on a land area of 4248 km², the majority of whom live on Espiritu Santo. The provincial capital Luganville is also located on this island .
