Santa Esmeralda

Santa Esmeralda was a mainly during the Disco - era globally successful 1970s studio project of French composer and producer Nicolas Skorsky and Jean-Manuel de Scarano with changing studio musicians and singers .

successes

For their first and most successful production in 1977, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and the subsequent LP of the same name , they engaged the Massachusetts , USA- born singer and saxophonist Leroy Gomez (also Leroy Gómes), who after a European tour with the Tavares and Studio recordings of Elton John's 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in Paris .

With a pounding flamenco rhythm, Spanish guitar played by José Souc and a driving wind section, they transformed the rather sedate, early psychedelic Animals classic into a powerful, dazzling dance anthem, not only for Europe's dance palaces . On the LP, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and the accompanying Esmeralda Suite take up the entire first page with a length of around 15 minutes. On page 2 there are three tracks, including a cover version of Van Morrison's Gloria and the ballad You're My Everything, written by Gomez .

The single released as Santa Esmeralda starring Leroy Gomez was able to place in the charts worldwide . In Germany (eight weeks) and Austria (four weeks) it reached number 1, in Switzerland number 4, in the USA number 15, and in Canada it came to number 10. The album of the same name, which was released on Philips / Puma, also occupied First place in Germany for eight weeks and was awarded platinum , which at that time corresponded to a sale of at least 500,000 records.

Jimmy Goings took over the lead vocals on the disc version of The House of the Rising Sun , also an Animals classic from the 1960s, which was released in late 1977 . The single could not repeat the success of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and only came in at number 27 in Germany. Nevertheless, the production team Skorsky / de Scarano, with Goings as lead singer, still released some albums, some of which were well discussed, until the early 1980s. like Another Cha-Cha from 1979, which for the first time only contains own compositions. In 1978 they recorded the song Seville Nights for the soundtrack of the film Thank God It's Friday (German title: Gottseidank, es ist Freitag ) .

In Germany, the rhythm part of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood was used in the ARD Sportschau from the end of the 1970s to the mid-1980s as a jingle and background music for the " Goal of the Month ". Quentin Tarantino used the song in his film Kill Bill as background music for a key scene, a sword fight between the bride ( Uma Thurman ) and O-Ren Ishii ( Lucy Liu ), and helped it to regain popularity in 2003.
