Santiago Silva Retamales

Santiago Jaime Silva Retamales (born June 17, 1955 in La Calera , Región de Valparaíso , Chile ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and military bishop of Chile.

Life

Santiago Silva Retamales received on 24 October 1980, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile with a degree in dogmatics and later a degree in biblical theology from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome .

He was Professor, Subregens and Regens of the San Rafaele de Lo Vasquez Seminary and also taught Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

On 16 February 2002. appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Bela and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Valparaíso . The Bishop of Valparaíso, Gonzalo Duarte García de Cortázar SSCC , donated him episcopal ordination on April 6 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile , Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa , and the Bishop of Rancagua , Francisco Javier Prado Aránguiz SSCC. Santiago Silva Retamales was also vicar general of the diocese of Valparaíso.

He is President of the Biblical Pastoral Commission of the Chilean Bishops' Conference and the Bishop responsible for the Pastoral Biblical Center for Latin America (CEBIPAL). In 2007 he attended the fifth general conference of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) in Aparecida as an expert on scriptures . In the following year he represented the Chilean Bishops' Conference at the 12th Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the subject of “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church”. From 2008 to 2011 he was general secretary of the Chilean Bishops' Conference. In 2016 he was elected chairman of the Chilean Bishops' Conference.

On May 19, 2011, he was elected General Secretary of CELAM for the term until 2015.

Pope Francis appointed him military bishop of Chile on July 7, 2015 . The Chilean army then appointed him brigadier general .
