history

The New Sarepta Baptist Church

In 1868 there was only a small church in today's urban area, where people from the area met weekly for prayer hours. Since the building was left to decay, the church members decided to build a new church. The initially nameless church was completed in 1869. Resident Sarepta Carter donated Bible inventory to the new church so it was ultimately named after her and known as the New Sarepta Baptist Church .

In 1879, another local resident built a general store on the property known as the Old Hickory Tree . The small settlement now consisted of a church, a cemetery, a shop and a few private farms and residential properties. Because of its proximity to the church, the store soon became known as the store over at Sarepta . The real history of the parish begins in 1884 when a post office was built.

traffic

In a north-south orientation, the city is crossed by US Highway 371 , which intersects with Magnolia , Prescott and Nashville (all in Arkansas) in the north and Interstate 20 in the south and merges with Interstate 49 after Coushatta . In an east-west orientation, Louisiana Highway 2 also runs through the city, which leads from Vivian in the west to the eastern border of Louisiana. Both highways cross in the city center.

The Interstate 20 runs about 35 kilometers south of the city.
