history

Finds on the Hühnerberg point to a Celtic settlement around 500 BC. Schönbach was probably created by the Franks in the 7th or 8th century. It is possible that Count Gumbert bequeathed the place to the first Bishop of Würzburg Burkard as part of the Gumbert donation .

The first documentary mention of Schönbach was in 1230. At the beginning of the 14th century, Aplo, called Zieche, and Friedrich, the son of Zieche zu Memmelsdorf , each received two parts of the tithe . Schönbach was in the Wallburg district, an administrative district of the Würzburg monastery . In the 15th century, the Bamberg Monastery and the Würzburg Monastery owned goods in the village. The Lords of Rotenhan were enfeoffed with the Bamberg property . Around 1600 Schönbach had ten stoves. The Hochstift Würzburg, the Hochstift Bamberg and the von Rotenhan each had three as feudal lords . One house belonged to the community. The high level of jurisdiction was incumbent on the Würzburg monastery with the Eltmann district court .

After the Thirty Years War , 2 out of 10 farms were still inhabited. In 1699 there were 13 farms, 8 of which were subject to the Lords of Rotenhan. Its residents professed their Protestant faith and attended church services in Gleisenau . By 1800 Schönbach had 22 houses, 8 of which belonged to the Würzburg monastery and 14 to the Lords of Rotenhan.

In 1862 the rural community of Schönbach, which consisted of the church village of Schönbach and the wasteland of Schönbachsmühle, was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Haßfurt and the district court of Eltmann . The main town of Schönbach had 136 inhabitants in 1871. In 1900 the 289.84 hectare rural community had 29 residential buildings and 156 inhabitants, of which 137 were Catholics and 19 Protestants. 142 inhabitants lived in 28 residential buildings in the church village. The Catholic residents belonged to the Parish of Eltmann, which is 5.0 kilometers away, and the relevant denominational school was located in the village. The evangelical residents belonged to the parish of Gleisenau, 2.5 kilometers away, where the evangelical denominational school was located.

In 1789 the first schoolhouse was built from a farmhouse, which was followed by new buildings in 1838 and 1902. In 1925 180 people lived in 27 residential buildings in Schönbach. In 1950 the parish had 193 residents and 30 residential buildings. The Protestant residents belonged to the parish in Gleisenau, 3.8 kilometers away. In 1953, the Catholic residents were re-parried to Ebelsbach. In 1970 there were 169 inhabitants and in 1987 159 inhabitants and 38 residential buildings with 42 apartments.

Schönbach has been part of the Ebelsbach community since July 1, 1971.

Catholic branch church St. James

The Catholic branch church St. Jakobus is a late Romanesque hall building , probably built in the 13th century. At that time the community belonged to the parish of Eltmann. The choir arch and the west wall mark the remains of the late Romanesque architectural style. The church has a retracted choir and a steep pitched roof with a roof turret and onion. The windows date from the 18th century, the interior is designed in baroque style. Extensive repairs to the church, which fell into disrepair in the 17th century, were carried out between 1669 and 1706.
