The Schönebecker Aue is 17.7 kilometers long, with the last 3.1 kilometers running in Bremen. The stream rises in the Lange Heide at a height of approx. 40 meters above sea level. NN. The Lange Heide, a Geest plateau north of Bremen in the urban area of Osterholz-Scharmbeck , is the headwaters of numerous other Geestrand brooks (e.g. Drepte , Giehler Bach , Scharmbecker Bach and Wienbeck ). From here the water of the floodplain flows through the Bremen Switzerland into the low meadows around Schönebeck Castle . Here it shapes the Auetal , named after her , which is an important local recreation area for the population of Bremen-Nord . About 300 meters after it has crossed the state border with Bremen, the floodplain is dammed into a pond that surrounds Schönebeck Castle in a crescent shape. This weir once served a water mill and is supposed to regulate the water level in the castle pond.

Below the weir, the floodplain flows through the Schönebeck and Vegesack districts of Bremen, initially through a meadow area, before it is crossed by the A 270 and Uhthoffstrasse within residential areas and finally passed through a pipe system under the Vegesack station square at the Bremen- Vegesack station becomes. It flows directly from the pipe system into the Vegesack port .

In the area of the upper reaches, the floodplain is considered to be "slightly to moderately changed". The weir at Schönebeck Castle and the piping at Vegesack train station, however, pose insurmountable obstacles for migrating fish.

In 2007 a "bypass channel" was inaugurated around the weir. This is a small, natural-looking canal that curves around the weir and was created by volunteer conservationists.

A few years ago the estuary of the floodplain was filled with stones, through which migrating fish should reach the stream again. The “opening” of the floodplain in the area of the Vegesack train station towards the harbor basin has been a controversial issue in Bremen's municipal politics for years.
