The Schiller Library , formerly the Schillerpark Public Library , is a public library in the Berlin district of Wedding . It is a branch of the Berlin-Mitte city library . It is named because of their original location on the Schiller Park , after the German poet Friedrich Schiller .
history
The library was founded in 1920 as a children's reading hall and youth library. It was on the first floor of the teacher's house at the Schillerpark school at Edinburger Strasse 43 in the English quarter of Weddings. In 1936 the library was expanded to include adults at the same location. The library was called the Schillerpark Public Library with 10,375 volumes at that time.
In 2006, the library, now located on upper Müllerstrasse , moved to the Wedding Town Hall in the former hall of the District Assembly of the Wedding District , which no longer had a function due to the merger of Weddings with Mitte and Tiergarten to form the new Mitte district . The hall there had 300 m² of usable space, which housed almost 40,000 media. She stayed there until December 2014.
The library has been located in its own new building next to Wedding Town Hall since July 2015.
Construction began in May 2013 and was finished in July 2015. The costs of 6.4 million euros were financed by means of urban development funding, from the federal-state program “Active Centers” Müllerstraße, the “Library in the District” program of the European Fund for Regional Development and local funds.
The media from the Hugo Heimann Library in Swinemünder Strasse, which was closed as part of the new Schiller Library building, was also integrated into the new Schiller Library .
profile
The library sees itself as a “social space-oriented central library” with a focus on young people. A separate “@hugo” youth media day is used for this purpose.
media
There are 66,000 items in the library. One focus is on media for young people. These include school and extra-occupational literature, learning software for students in secondary levels I and II, but also mangas , manhwas and animes , PC and console games. The library has 20 PC workstations and offers free WiFi .
Makerspace
As part of the MakerCom project, the new workshops, like the previously established ones, will be financed from funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the “Libraries in District II (BIST II)” program. The makerspace set up in the Schiller Library between 2016 and 2018 is being transferred to a new phase. These projects are offered here:
FreeLab: under expert guidance, we open our makerspace for all makers who want to use our technology (such as 3-D printing or textile printing)
Jewelry workshop: bling, bling - design your jewelry yourself! New workshop in the makerspace of the Schiller Library
Sewing workshop: design your individual key chain under expert guidance. Your creativity knows no limits.
building
The library building was built by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment according to a design by the AV1 architects. The new library building extends over three floors and has 1,800 m² of usable space. The building stands on an older fire wall that previously shaped the square. This is included in the construction. The library has a perforated metal facade in brass, large windows and a fully glazed foyer. In addition to the reading rooms, it has event rooms and a youth bistro. The technical equipment includes, for example, Sonic Chairs - armchairs with a built-in stereo system - and game consoles.
