The Schleswig-Holstein is a combined RoRo and rail ferry from Scandlines Deutschland GmbH , which has been in service on the Vogelfluglinie since 1997 .
history
The Schleswig-Holstein was commissioned together with its sister ship Germany as a newly developed double-ended ferry in April 1996 from Van der Giessen-De Noord in Krimpen aan den IJssel by the German Baltic Sea ferry company . She had already started her scheduled service on August 1, 1997, but was only baptized together with Germany on October 9, 1997 . Godmother was the then Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein , who gave it its name, Heide Simonis .
The ferry got off to an unfortunate start and on October 11, 1997 hit the east pier twice. The repair was supposed to take place in the Flender shipyard in Lübeck , but there the ship overturned when docked and suffered additional damage. The Schleswig-Holstein drove to Rostock on its own and was then repaired at the Neptun shipyard .
Just two months after the first accident, the ferry ran aground in Rødbyhavn and had to return to the shipyard.
On August 24, 2009, shortly after leaving the port, the Schleswig-Holstein collided with the US sailing yacht Mahdi, about three nautical miles northwest of Puttgarden . There were two people and a dog on board who could be rescued.
In June 2011, the refrigeration unit of a truck on board the ship caught fire. The fire was discovered and extinguished by a crew member.
technical description
In contrast to their predecessors, the two sister ships only have one track to accommodate an ICE TD or DSB MF . The transport of freight wagons has been stopped on the Vogelfluglinie. The ships automatically tie up in the widened ferry beds with hooks at the level of the railway deck. Because the double-ended ferries no longer have to perform the usual turning maneuvers, the travel time has been reduced by 25 percent and is now only 45 minutes.
In 2013 Scandlines had a hybrid drive installed for the first time at the Prinsesse Benedigte. In the course of 2014, the retrofitting of the three other ferries of the Vogelfluglinie followed. The hybrid drive combines a combustion engine and an electric drive, with excess energy being stored in batteries. According to the shipping company, this can save up to 15 percent of CO₂ emissions. In addition, gas scrubbers were installed for exhaust gas desulfurization .
Others
The new constructions of Scandlines Danmark A / S, which were also put into service in 1997, the Prins Richard and Prinsesse Benedicts have almost the same main parameters, but have differences in the design and the layout of the passenger area.
