The Steinbach Castle is a Grade II listed castle in the district of Steinbach of the Lower Franconian town of Lohr am Main in Bavaria . The so-called old castle , the so-called new castle , a fountain in the castle courtyard, the castle wall with a portal from the 16th century, the castle park and farm buildings belong to the overall complex .

history

The Voit von Rieneck ruled Steinbach in the 16th century. The two-storey wing of the old castle still preserved comes from this time . He wears a hipped roof . There is a round defense tower with a dungeon and conical roof on the street side . The entrance portal can be dated to 1589 with inscriptions.

In 1625 the von Hutten family came into the possession of Steinbach through marriage. In addition to his duties as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg , Christoph Franz von Hutten also took on the role of head of a family incorporated in the knightly canton of Rhön-Werra . He had the New Palace built for his brother Franz Ludwig from 1725 to 1728 . The plans presumably came from the Würzburg court architect Joseph Greissing or his successor in office Balthasar Neumann . Georg Bayer, a student of Greising, could also have participated in the planning and construction. The building is a two and a half storey mansard roof with pavilion-like, short side wings at the corners. In 1945, in the last weeks of the Second World War , the castle was badly damaged. It was then rebuilt.
