The Homburg (also Homburg od Wern , formerly Hohenberg od Wern ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 300  m above sea level. NN near Gössenheim in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart . It is considered one of the largest castle ruins in Germany.

history

The castle was built between 1028 and 1031 on behalf of the Würzburg Ministeriale Reinhart von Hohenberg from Adelsberg . The outer bailey with the kennel comes from the early Gothic period (around 1235) and was expanded in the kennel area from 1470 onwards.

Dietrich von Hohenberg died in 1381 as the last of his family without a male heir. This ended the Reinhard line. His daughter Christine with her husband Konrad IV von Bickenbach was the sole heir to the entire Hohenberger property. Hohenburg thus belonged to the Bickenbach family .

All assets of the former possessions Hohenberg were 1,469 from the house Bickenbach to the Bishopric of Würzburg in the form of the Prince Bishop 's Rudolf II. Of Scherenberg , Duke of Franconia , sold. Homburg became the official seat of the Homburg an der Werren office in 1492 and was given an official .

In 1525 the castle survived the Peasants' War unscathed ; but in 1680 there was a fire in the manor house. This started the gradual decline of the buildings.
