Schönart Castle ruins

The castle ruin Schönarts , also called Alte Burg , is the remainder of a spur castle on an approximately 194 meter high terrain spur west of the hamlet of Schönarts in the municipality of Eußenheim in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart in Bavaria .

history

The castle was built in 1268 by the Lords of Henneberg and called "Castrum Schonenhart". While construction was still going on, the then bishop Iring von Reinstein of the Würzburg monastery ordered the construction freeze and the demolition of the castle by decree , as he saw it as a threat to the predominance of the diocese in the Karlstadt region . There is no evidence that the castle was rebuilt.

The castle site still shows the rest of an outer wall, the foundations of the keep and the ramparts of the moat on the slope side.
