The Lohrer Schloss , also called Kurmainzer Schloss, is a listed castle complex in the Lower Franconian town of Lohr am Main in Bavaria .

history

The foundation stone for Lohr Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1389, was laid around 1340 by Count Gerhard V. von Rieneck on the northwest corner of the old town of Lohr am Main. At first it was just a residential tower based on the Flemish model, which had been surrounded by a moat and a wall ring since the late 15th century . Right next to it were the band house, forester's house , remise and cellar building .

After the death of the last Rienecker Count Philip III. In 1559, the Electors of Mainz took over the building as rulers and gradually gave it its current appearance. It became the seat of the elector's chief magistrates . The best-known senior bailiff was Philipp Christoph von und zu Erthal , who had the castle as an official and family residence from 1719 until his death in 1748. His two prince-bishop sons, one of the last electoral princes of Mainz and prince-bishop for the diocese of Worms , Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal , and the future prince-bishop of Bamberg and Würzburg , Franz Ludwig von Erthal , grew up here .

In 1814 the Kingdom of Bavaria took over the castle and used it as an official residence. Among other things, the district office of the Lohr district was located there until the regional reform in 1972 . In 1913 the building was renovated .

In 1936, the Lohr Local History and Spessart Museum was established in the knight's hall of the castle. This was closed in 1942 and reopened in 1949. Since 1972 there has only been the Spessart Museum in the building , which is primarily concerned with the history of the castle and the Spessart and is dedicated to the topic of people and the forest .
