particularities Winzingen Castle and Haardter Castle in Spurlage; from there to 409.3  m rising ridge

The Schlossberg is a mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate and the southeast foothills of the 554  m above sea level. NHN high wine region in the Haardt on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest . The Schlossberg ends in a mountain spur of the same name. Most of the time, this spur is meant when the Schlossberg is mentioned.

The ridge of the Weinbiet foothills falls from its highest point ( 300  m ), which is southeast of the Weinbiet summit, to its spur in the southeast at about 230  m . The spur contributes to about 220  m the castle Winzingen and Haardter Castle ; the name of the mountain is derived from the structures.

geography

The Weinbiet massif, to which the Schlossberg above the Haardt district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse also belongs, lies on the western shoulder of the Upper Rhine Rift . This collapsed about 50 million years ago and was later replenished by deposited sediments to the level of today's Upper Rhine Plain .

The southern slope of the wine region merges from the north into the Schlossberg, which is separated from the lowlands in the east by a foothill zone. On its west and south-west side, the Schlossberg slopes down into the Meisental , through which the Sulzwiesengraben flows. This flows further downwards in the urban area of Neustadt from the left into the Floßbach , a left derivative of the Speyerbach , which flows back into it after a good 1.5 km. The Haardtrand-Schlossberg nature reserve is located on the south-west slope down into the Meisental ; beyond the valley, the Wolfsberg ( 490.7  m ) foothills stretch to the south and south-west.

biology

The eastern flank of the Weinbiet south-east runner facing the Rhine plain is mostly overgrown with mixed forest. Among the deciduous trees , beeches are most common, but the sweet chestnuts with their light green foliage are particularly noticeable. In contrast, pines predominate on the mountain ridge. Together with spruces and firs , they are also the main vegetation on the south-western flank that slopes down to the Meisental. Since this side, including the nature reserve, is to the windward side of the prevailing westerly and southwest winds in the region, it receives a little more rainfall than the rest of the mountain. That is why more and more moisture-loving plants such as mosses and ferns thrive under the conifers , which form biotopes and provide cover and shelter for small organisms worthy of protection .

Attractions

Winzingen Castle

On the outermost spur of the Schlossberg, 20 to 30 m above the residential buildings in the Haardt district, two cultural monuments that characterize the town , the Winzingen Castle and the Haardter Castle, rise . The castle dates from the 10th century. It was destroyed twice, in 1525 in the Peasants' War and in 1696 in the Palatinate War of Succession ; after the second destruction it was no longer built permanently and is now a ruin. The small castle next to it was built in 1875 and, after various restorations, serves as a residential building and hotel.

The Schlossberg is only accessible via hiking trails that start near the two historic buildings. The main path first leads 700 m up the Meisental and then to the right in serpentines to the ridge, which it reaches at a height of around 360  m . On this the path then continues slightly uphill in a northerly direction until after 1 km it meets other paths that come from the Nebelberg or from the Gimmeldinger Tal and all ultimately lead to the Weinbiet summit.

Viticulture

Wine is grown on the slope rising to the west between the residential area of Haardt and the eastern foot of the Schlossberg . The vineyards were formerly the location Haardter Schlossberg . In 1827, when the Palatinate belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria , an auction of vineyards took place in Haardt, which at that time was still a winegrowing village . This also included "fifteen Aren Wingert im Schloßberg ... im Banne Haardt". Since the Haardter Castle was far from being built at that time, the already existing name Schloßberg apparently referred to Winzingen Castle.
