The Neunkirchen a Sand – Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach railway , also known more recently as the Schnaittachtalbahn , is a single-track branch line in Central Franconia . It branches at the station Neunkirchen a Sand from the Nuremberg-Cheb railway and runs from there north through the valley of Schnaittach to its final stop Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach .
history
The branch line was opened on December 5, 1895 as the Schnaittach Bahnhof – Schnaittach Markt line after Schnaittach's integration into the line from Nuremberg to Bayreuth had failed in favor of the route through the Pegnitz Valley . The name of the exit station Schnaittach Bahnhof was changed in 1970 to Neunkirchen a Sand .
An expansion planned from 1907 to Betzenstein , 12 km away , was never realized due to disagreements about the route and the outbreak of the First World War . Train crossings used to take place in the former Schnaittach Markt station , which is only a stopping point after dismantling and removing the switch systems.
A two-tier locomotive shed with a water crane was built in Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach for operation with steam locomotives . The locomotive shed still exists today (2017) without a siding. Due to lack of use, it expires more and more.
Since September 27, 1987, the line has been integrated into the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area (VGN) and has line number R31 there . As part of the economic stimulus program, the stations of the Schnaittachtalbahn were comprehensively upgraded and modernized between autumn 2009 and summer 2010 and equipped with a dynamic passenger information system.
business
Since September 15, 2008, the route has been used exclusively by class 648 diesel multiple units, after it was gradually converted to the new vehicles in anticipation of the “ Middle Franconian Railway ”, which has been operating since the 2008/2009 timetable change . A daily hourly service has been offered since December 14, 2008, and trains are also connected to Nuremberg from time to time. Class 612 railcars operate occasionally .
Before that, diesel railcars of the 614 series operated and n-car sets with drawn trains in school traffic with diesel locomotives of the 218 series .
Future prospects
According to the concept of the Bavarian state government for more electromobility on the rails in Bavaria, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann proposed the route for electrification from a Bavarian perspective.
