The Seaports of Lower Saxony are an amalgamation of the nine seaports in the state of Lower Saxony . These include the locations in Brake (Unterweser) , Cuxhaven , Emden , Leer (East Friesland) , Nordenham , Oldenburg (Oldb) , Papenburg , Stade and Wilhelmshaven . Together, the port locations on the Ems , Jade , Weser and Elbe form one of the most important logistics hubs in Germany.

Organization and history

The Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH is a public-private partnership between the State of Lower Saxony and the private seaport traffic in the nine Lower Saxony seaports with the legal form of a limited liability company (Germany) . As a port marketing company, Seaports of Niedersachsen markets the ports of Lower Saxony worldwide and provides logistical networks for the ports.

Due to the expected growth in the volume of goods traffic, the seaports of Lower Saxony will be further expanded; investments of around EUR 60 million were planned for 2012/2013.

Cargo handling

In 2019 around 53.5 million goods were handled via the nine Seaports ports; in 2018 it was 49.8 million t. In 2017, 45.9 million t were handled (2016: 48.6 million t; 2015: 51.9 million t; 2014: 46.4 million t; 2013: 45.9 million t).

The seaports of Lower Saxony specialize in handling, storage and distribution of the following goods:

  • Bulky piece goods (e.g. iron and steel products, forest products (paper, pulp, sawn and logs))
  • Bulk goods (e.g. crude oil, petroleum products, coal, liquid and solid chemicals, building materials)
  • Project cargo (large and oversized piece goods with high ton weights, e.g. systems (parts), generators, etc.)
  • Automobiles (new vehicles e.g. from BMW, VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Peugeot; the offer also includes logistics system services for the automotive industry )
  • RoRo (accompanied and unaccompanied truck trailers , Mafi)
  • Wind turbines and components
  • Container
  • Cooling charge

The port of Emden acts as a major shipping port for vehicles for VW (1.25 million cars in 2011); Oldenburg is an important port location for handling agricultural goods. Business with offshore wind turbines is also of great importance for the seaports of Lower Saxony .
