The Evangelistar from Seeon , also Seeoner Evangelistar or Evangelistar Heinrichs II. , Is an evangelist that originated between 1002 and 1014 in the Seeon monastery . It is now in the Bamberg State Library under the signature Msc. Bibl. 95 kept.

The manuscript , donated to Bamberg Cathedral by Heinrich II. , Encompassing 124 parchment sheets in the format 24.5 × 17.6 cm, contains the Gospel sections recited during the Holy Mass , the so-called pericopes , and is richly decorated with initials , decorative pages and ten full-page pages Miniatures .

In the double-sided dedication picture (fol. 7 v –8 r ), the crowned King Heinrich as the donor of Mary, the Mother of God , presents a book with a jewel-decorated cover . It represents the Bamberg Cathedral. In the Seeon pontifical in the rite to celebrate the consecration of the church, the names of Mary and the cathedral patrons Petrus and Georg are emphasized in the same way by capitals . Both sides of the picture are formally designed in the same way as a diptych . Arcade arches supported by pillars are set in a finely structured rectangular frame, which encloses fields of gold speckled purple . The figures of equal rank in terms of size seem to float in front of the gold background of the arcades - a design feature typical of Ottonian book illumination . Only the nimbus of Mary indicates her primacy. Name designations in capitals indicate the sitters: Heinricus rex pius ("The pious (God-fearing) King Heinrich", thus a reference to the origin of the Evangelistar before the coronation of the emperor in 1014) and S [an] c [t] a Maria Theotocos ( "Holy Mary Mother of God"); the letters Th are shown with a Greek theta .

The contemporary silk binding is extraordinary : fabrics were often part of magnificent bindings, but a fabric was rarely used as a binding decoration. In the present case, a flexible parchment envelope was covered with samite in two different shades of red. The individual fields of the diamond net pattern are decorated in rows alternating with pairs of birds and bust medallions . The fabric was most likely made in an Imperial - Byzantine workshop in Constantinople towards the end of the tenth century .

The date proposed by Gude Suckale-Redlefsen before 1012 is based on the assumption that the manuscript was intended for the main altar in the east choir of Bamberg Cathedral, which was consecrated to Mary on May 6, 1012 when the cathedral altars were consecrated.

In the directory of the Bamberg Cathedral Treasury of 1736 the Evangelistary among the seven "antique" is called, although they were distinguished by the extraordinary splendor of their covers, but not in the cathedral treasury, but in the cathedral library were kept separately.
