Seine River is a river in the western Canadian province of Ontario near the border with the US state Minnesota .

It has a length of 240 km and flows from Lac des Mille Lacs in a westerly direction through the districts of Thunder Bay , Rainy River and Kenora to Rainy Lake . In the times of the fur trade, the river was an important transport route. Gold was discovered on the river at the end of the 19th century. Various natural resources are mined in the river region. The Seine River is also used for recreational activities such as canoeing and kayaking . The river was named after the river of the same name through Paris in France.

River diversion

In 1943, a section of the Seine River north of Atikokan was diverted, so that an iron ore deposit under the Steep Rock Lake, through which the river previously flowed, became accessible for their exploitation. The river now runs from Marmion Lake to Finlayson Lake and from there in a south-westerly direction over Little Falls Lake and Modred Lake to the old river bed. The mine is no longer in operation today.

Hydropower plants

The Brookfield- operated Valerie Falls hydropower plant is located at the river diversion below Little Falls Lake .

Further downstream, AbitibiBowater operates two hydropower plants, each with 2 vertical Francis turbines: Calm Lake and Sturgeon Falls (120 km and 90 km east of the city of Fort Frances ).
