Localization of Utrecht in the Netherlands

The medium wave transmitter Lopik was one of the oldest broadcasting facilities for medium wave broadcasting in the Netherlands . It broadcast its easily receivable program at night all over Europe on the frequency 675 kHz with a power of 120 kW via a 196 m high, self-radiating transmitter mast , which was isolated from earth and which was built in 1938 and was located in the immediate vicinity of the Gerbrandytoren . The latter never served as a medium wave transmitter.

history

The transmitter system, consisting of two transmitter masts, was built in 1938 and commissioned in 1940/41 by the German Wehrmacht, which was then occupying the Netherlands. The Reichssender Hamburg was activated on the frequency 754 kHz and a special program on the frequency 1000 kHz. In 1945 the transmitters were switched to 722 and 995 kHz. From 1947 the public service broadcaster of the Netherlands broadcast its two programs Hilversum 1 and 2 (today NPO Radio 2 and NPO Radio 1 ). As part of the Copenhagen Wave Plan , the frequencies were changed to 746 and 1007 kHz in 1950. In 1970 the third program Hilversum 3 (today NPO 3FM ) , which had been broadcast from another location since 1965, was relocated to Lopik and transmitted first on 1250 kHz, then on 674 kHz from 1975. Due to the Geneva Wave Plan , the frequencies were changed in 1978 to 675 kHz, 747 kHz and 1008 kHz. After the medium-wave transmitter Flevoland near Zeewolde went into operation in 1980, the last two frequencies were relocated there and the power of the 675 kHz frequency, which was now in Lopik, increased from 20 to 120 kW. Until 1994, Dutch radio still used the Lopik transmitter for its third program, then it was used by the private broadcaster Radio 10 until 2003 , by Arrow Classic Rock from 2003 to 2009 and by Radio Maria Nederland from 2009 until it was closed in 2015 .

Until April 21, 2004, there was a second 165-meter-high steel truss mast, insulated from the ground, in the immediate vicinity. It served as a transmitting antenna for the frequency 1008 kHz until 1980 and has since been kept as a reserve for this. In 2000 it was put into operation with a power limited to 2 kW for the programs Radio Nationaal and later with Radio 192 on the frequency 1332 kHz. This station was relocated in 2003 because of a neighboring residential area.

In July 2015, the operation of the medium wave transmitter was discontinued by the transmitter operator KPN Broadcast Services . The reason for this was the dilapidated condition of the now 76-year-old and collapsing transmission mast. In January 2015, an emergency repair had to be carried out due to a poor friend. Operation of the medium wave frequency 675 kHz therefore ended on September 1, 2015. On September 4, 2015, the 196 meter high mast was blown up. A nearby 80-meter-high transmission mast, which originally transmitted the program from Hilversum 3 to 1250 kHz and last served as a reserve for the 747 kHz frequency, which was also switched off on September 1, 2015, was blown up on the same day.
