Sepp Hochreiter , also Josef Hochreiter , (born February 14, 1967 in Mühldorf am Inn , Bavaria ) is a German computer scientist . Since 2006 he has been director of the Institute for Bioinformatics at the University of Linz , where he has also headed the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (AI LAB) at the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) since 2017 .

Life

Hochreiter grew up on a farm near Mühldorf am Inn in Bavaria. Originally he was supposed to take over the farm. From 1979 he attended the economic branch of the Realschule in Altötting , in 1983 he switched to the technical field at the Altötting technical college . In 1985 he began studying computer science at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich . After completing his intermediate diploma in 1986, he moved to the Technical University of Munich , where he continued his computer science studies. At the same time he studied mathematics at the Hagen Open University . In 1991 he wrote his diploma thesis with the title Investigations into dynamic neural networks with Jürgen Schmidhuber , in which he formulated the idea of a neural long-term memory. After completing his studies, he worked for Allianz AG for two years . In 1994 he began a doctoral degree at the Technical University of Munich, where he obtained a doctorate in 1999. rer. nat. PhD . His doctoral supervisor was Wilfried Brauer .

In 1997 he published a paper on long short-term memory (LSTM) together with Jürgen Schmidhuber . In 1999 he went to the University of Colorado Boulder as a postdoctoral fellow with Michael C. Mozer. In 2001 he joined as a research assistant at the Neural Information Processing Group of the Technical University of Berlin , where he in the SFB Theoretical Biology Working Group analysis of molecular data derived.

In 2006 he was appointed professor for bioinformatics at the University of Linz, where he has since headed the Institute for Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science and Technology and introduced the bachelor's degree in bioinformatics in cooperation with the University of South Bohemia in Budweis and the master's degree in bioinformatics. In 2006 he also became a board member of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG). In 2017 he was entrusted with the establishment and management of the laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (AI LAB) at the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) at Kepler University.

In February 2019, the founding of the Institute of Advanced Research in Artificial Intelligence (IARAI) was announced, and Sepp Hochreiter, the physicist David Kreil and the mathematician Michael Kopp from Here Technologies became the managing director of the institute with locations in Linz, Vienna and Zurich .

His main research interests include various machine learning methods , including deep learning, reinforcement learning and representational learning, as well as biclustering , matrix factorization and statistical methods. He is also involved in data mining and computational linguistics (natural language processing). Günter Klambauer is one of his doctoral students .
