Sereine (partly also with article : La Sereine ; French: [the] serene / cheerful / self-contained) is a listed monument in France as a "maritime heritage" and as " bateau d'intérêt patrimonial " (in German " Museum ship ”) valid wooden yacht of the French sailing school Glenans . The cutter -rigged sloop is mostly for advanced sailors and especially in the skipper used education as their traditional use, according to its owner close attention to the chronology of the maneuvers required, and it was also designed for long distance. As part of her job as a training boat , Sereine took partin the first Tall Ships' Race in 1956 and has since sailed to numerous meetings and regattas of traditional sailors in and around France.

The long-time non-motorized sailor still has many traditional shipbuilding elements, such as the mast garden- like attachment of mooring nails , the guidance of the traps over tackles (without winches ), the reefing system of the main sail with discs and cleats on the tree or the support of the wooden mast through backstage as well as the wooden blocks , the skylight above the fair / salon and basically the wooden construction. The rigging is characterized, as with other traditional vessels, labor-intensive than the more modern boats. As is not uncommon for sailboats at the Glénans sailing school, the technical equipment is kept simple - GPS (without electronic nautical chart or plotter ), plumb line and log , plus a VHF radio and a battery-operated shortwave receiver. The rest of the equipment is also sometimes simple (e.g. bucket as a replacement for a sink in the galley; plastic boxes clad with a wooden panel as "drawers"; some inexpensive wood) to spartan (berths mostly narrower than 50 cm), but often very practical (e.g. large chart table across the entire width of the deck structure, with shelves for documents that are ready to hand; double hatch / companionway system for access to the sail load in different weather conditions).

In the course of her career, Sereine went on ocean trips to the Canaries , the Azores , Norway and Ireland . Home port is Concarneau in Brittany.

history

As early as 1948, Philippe and Hélène Viannay, who founded the sailing school Les Glénans in 1947, commissioned the boat designer Henri Dervin (including 4 vents from Marcel Bardiaux and Kurun from J.-Y. Le Tourmelin) for a yacht suitable for the ocean. According to his plans, the wooden yacht was built from 1950 to 1951 by the boat builders Jean Laurent and Maurice Derrien in Pont-Aven ; according to the principles of the sailing school at the time, it was not motorized. Since then, Sereine has belonged to the Les Glénans sailing school, for which she has been the first or one of the first cabin yachts at the school since it was launched in 1952. From 1952 to 1998 5,000 sailing students under 500 different skippers were trained on Sereine (data from 2004). During this period she covered around 130,000 nautical miles (240,000 kilometers).

In 1998, after decades of service , Sereine was in such a bad condition that it could no longer be used in schools. In 2001 she was protected as maritime heritage and 2004 shipyard Chantier du Guip in Brest towed. At this point in time 34 frames were broken, the stem and parts of the deck could no longer be saved, the hull had to be completely re- caulked , etc. Sereine was overhauled for two years (including rigging, new electrics ...) until it was completely renewed on June 24, 2005 was launched again and inaugurated. She returned to her home port of Concarneau in the north of the Glénan Islands, from where she is usually used again on one- or two-week trips.

In September 2007, Sereine was stolen from the port of Concarneau when she was about to be rigged for the winter. A man in his thirties drove them to the island of Ouessant , where the ship was recognized and the thief was arrested by the police. Since the ship is not for sale due to its popularity, is well known in Ouessant and the man behaved conspicuously on land, the theft or his motive was considered "mysterious" in the media.

Participation in meetings of traditional sailors and regattas

In addition to her duties as a training ship, Sereine regularly goes to meetings or regattas of traditional ships. She took part in the first edition of the Tall Ships' Races in 1956 and came in third place as one of eight ships in the class of vehicles under 100 tons. She took part in the Fastnet race in 1964 or 1965 and in Falmouth-Skagen in 1966 , as well as in most of the traditional sailing meetings in Brest and Douarnenez (except in the years 1998-2005).

For the 50th anniversary of the Tall Ships' Races, Sereine won the special prize for the first race in 2006 for the fastest "veteran" - the fastest ship that had already sailed in 1956 - of classes B, C and D ( 1st Veteran Class B, C or D Vessel to Finish ).
