Sergei Iossifowitsch Avakjanz ( Russian Сергей Иосифович Авакянц ; born April 6, 1957 in Yerevan ) is a Russian admiral and commander of the Pacific Fleet .

Life

Awakjanz, son of an officer of the Soviet Seekriegsflotte , attended from 1975 to 1980, the Black Sea Military Academy PS Nakhimov in Sevastopol . He began his service career in the Soviet armed forces in the Northern Fleet as the commander of the artillery combat section on the destroyer Admiral Yumashev . On this ship he served first as second, then from 1980 to 1989 as first officer and then from 1996 to 1998 as commander of the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov . In 1991 he completed a two-year course at the Naval War Academy NG Kuznetsov . From 1998 to 2001 he worked as chief of staff of the 43rd Missile Ship Division and from 2001 to 2003 as its commander. He was then commander of the 7th Operational Squadron until 2005 . In 2005 he began studying at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces , which he successfully completed in 2007. He was then provided from May to September 2007 for the position of Chief of Staff of the Novorossiysk Naval Base of the Black Sea Fleet . Instead, Awakjanz took over the post of commander of the Primorsk Flotilla, which was subordinate to the Pacific Fleet, until 2010.

By order of the President of the Russian Federation on August 25, 2010, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Pacific Fleet. On October 29, 2010, he took over the duties of commander of the Pacific Fleet after Admiral Sidenko had been appointed commander of the Far Eastern Military District. Awakjanz has been in command of the Pacific Fleet since May 3, 2012 and was promoted to Vice Admiral by the Russian Defense Minister on December 13, 2012 . Two years later he was promoted to admiral.
