history

Seugast was first mentioned in a document in the foundation deed of the Ensdorf monastery from 1139. Seugast was also mentioned in a legal book by Friedrich I von Hohenlohe , which was written in 1348 and was only printed in 1852. However, it certifies the existence of Seugast as early as 1123.

In the Middle Ages Seugast belonged to the Vogtei Vilseck and thus to the Bamberg area. The Vogtei Vilseck was divided into three courts, the upper or Hahnbacher court, the Gibbacher court and the lower or Poppenrichter court, also called peasant law above Amberg or below the Erzberg. Seugast was a member of the Lassenbach court.

By the first Bavarian community edict, Seugast was assigned to the tax district and the district court of Amberg and thus to the Naab district in 1808 . After the Naabkreis was dissolved in favor of the Mainkreis and the Regenkreis , Seugast was assigned to the Regenkreis in 1810 together with the Amberg District Court (from 1838 "Upper Palatinate and Regensburg").

Through the second Bavarian municipal edict, Seugast became an independent political municipality in 1818.

The Vilseck district court was founded in 1838, to which Seugast was assigned together with the tax communities of Adlholz , Ehenfeld, Gibbach , Gressenwöhr , Großschönbrunn, Hahnbach , Iber , Irlbach , Langenbruck, Massenricht , Schalkenthan, Schlicht, Sigl, Süß and Vilseck and removed from the Amberg district court .

The first chapel in Seugast was consecrated on July 3, 1904.

The two world wars also took their toll on Seugast. During the First World War , twelve soldiers from Seugast and Weickenricht died, two were missing. During the Second World War , 36 of the 140 soldiers from the Seugast community fell and 15 were missing.

On January 1, 1972, Seugast was incorporated into Freihung together with parts of the community Großschönbrunn and the community Thansüß .

Culture and sights

St. Marien village church

Seugast-8783.jpg

On June 3, 1858, 25 Seugast families came together for a village assembly and made the decision to build a church in Seugast. However, the plans did not go beyond a location and a finished construction plan. In a second attempt on September 14, 1903, construction of a chapel began. On July 3, 1904, the chapel was consecrated by Father Meinrad Plank and parish provisional Jakob Meier, initially with a provisional altar. On September 4, 1904, the temporary altar was replaced by an altar in the neo-Gothic style. The altar was made by master carpenter Franz Ringer from Vilseck. In 1928 the chapel was expanded to a church for the first time. Among other things, the church got a tower. In 1958 and 1959, the church was expanded to include another transept. The altar from 1904 has been replaced with a new one. The church received its present form. In 1986 the church was renovated inside and out. It is one of three churches in Bavaria that do not belong to the church but to the community.

The voluntary fire brigade Seugast was founded on June 3, 1894 and the first flag was consecrated on August 9, 1908, which was financed by donations from association members. On November 10, 1963, the new fire station was inaugurated. On August 23, 1969, the fire brigade received its first fire engine .

Schützenverein Gut Ziel Seugast

Even before the shooting club was founded , there were shooting activities in Seugast. At that time, there was shooting across a bedroom of a private individual. The association was founded in May 1912 by Plank, the main teacher at the time. During the occupation after the Second World War, any club activity was prohibited. Life in the club only came back in 1951. In 1970 a new shooting club was built.

economy

There are extensive sandstone deposits in Seugast that were used as building material. The first evidence of a sandstone quarry goes back to 1605. Up to 1953 sandstone was quarried in up to ten sandstone quarries. Seugaster sandstone was used throughout Germany, for example in the Nuremberg Palace of Justice , where the Nuremberg trials took place.

education

In 1872 Seugast received its own school. Until then, the children had attended school in Großschönbrunn. In 1937 the school house was sold to Josef Lehner from Pappenberg. A new building was planned, but prevented by the outbreak of World War II. Until the new school building was built in 1952, the old classroom had to be rented for two classes. The school in Seugast was closed in 1986. Since then, the Seugast children have been taught in primary and secondary schools in Freihung.
