Already in 1130 Ehenfeld was mentioned as Ehenvelt for the first time and on March 3, 1293 a second time as Eheveld . The name has its roots in the word Ährenfeld. This original meaning of the name can still be heard clearly from the current pronunciation of the name by the locals in the northern Bavarian dialect . On January 3, 1325 Ludwig the Bavarian Ehenfeld left Heinrich von Lengenfeld for the damage suffered in the battle of Mühldorf .

In the High and Late Middle Ages, Ehenfeld was located at the intersection of two important trade routes, the Golden Road between Nuremberg and Prague and the connection between Frankfurt am Main - Amberg - Regensburg . During this time, Amberg was the center of iron production in Europe and the terminus of the salt ships from the south. Today's AS 19, the former Hohe Straße, but also a path further north, in the book, can be considered as fragments of the Goldenen Straße. At that time there was a fortification on today's Kirchberg in Ehenfeld. The morgue was originally a defense tower. It is not known whether this defense system was used for protection or for highway robbery. In the oldest part of the church, the current sacristy, there are frescoes from the 12th to 15th centuries.

The Pestmarterl at the village entrance, renovated in 1998, is a reminder of the plague during the Thirty Years' War . The Schwedenkreuz is located at today's AS 19. There is said to have been a homestead that fell victim to looting during the Thirty Years' War. Homesteads in Irles, Bimbach, Buch and Axelshof are said to have suffered a similar fate. The inhabitants of these homesteads settled in the vicinity of the church fortress in Ehenfeld. Horseshoes from Gustav Adolf's horses have also been found in the Irles. According to tradition, there was also a castle or palace complex in the book, a wooded area in the northwest of Ehenfeld.

At the beginning of modern times , the route of the Golden Road shifted from Hirschau away from Ehenfeld further south. When the importance of the Upper Palatinate for iron production disappeared, this was also the end of the second north-south trade route. Ehenfeld was thus apart. The development of the population stagnated, while it continued to develop in the places on the new route of the Prague-Nuremberg connection, today's B 14 . Tax descriptions from 1650 and 1700 show Ehenfeld as a farming and craft village, which it remained until the 1970s. Written evidence shows that 40 farmers, 13 Austrians and seven day laborers lived in Ehenfeld in 1804. There was also a shoemaker, two carpenters, three weavers and a blacksmith as craftsmen. In the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the number of commercial operations increased continuously. In 1843 there were two butchers (as part-time or part-time farmers), four tailors, three shoemakers, three linen weavers, a blacksmith and two landlords. In March 1939 Ehenfeld had twelve craft businesses with 22 employees and a retail business with two employees.

In 1969 there were still 56 farms in operation, 33 of them as part-time businesses. The total number of people employed in agriculture was 106, of which 33 were employed in part-time businesses. Four craft businesses employ eleven people and two retail stores have two each. There were also two small industrial companies, the clay pits Monika from Buchtal GmbH and Barbara from Ton- und Schamotte-Werke Ponholz . 18 people earned their living in these pits. At that time there were already 107 employees commuting, there were three inbound. In 1995 Ehenfeld still had 12 craft businesses and 25 agricultural businesses.

If you compare the town view of Ehenfeld (from the bird's view) of 1970 with that of 1852, you can see that the old town center has hardly changed in these 120 years. Until the beginning of the village renewal in 1998, the through-road in the direction of Großschönbrunn had the old pavement typical of Ehenfeld. In the 1970s, a building area with 46 building sites was opened up in the east of the town center on Kindlaser Straße. In 1995 this building area was expanded and 32 building sites were designated on the Zeilerweg south of it.

Ehenfeld received the first aqueduct as early as 1906. With the help of financial support from a private donor, the spring near the alder trees was taken and a water pipe was built to supply the village. The neighboring town of Hirschau did not receive a water pipe until 1950 to 1953. The village received a sewer system between 1954 and 1956. Before that, the sewage flowed on the unpaved roads and from 1935 in paved trenches next to the road. Ehenfeld was connected to the electricity network in 1922.

With the Bavarian territorial reform, Ehenfeld lost its independence on January 1, 1971 and was incorporated into the town of Hirschau. Nevertheless, the village continues to exist as a community with around 20 clubs and groups.

Population development

In 1894 Ehenfeld had 488 inhabitants, in 1933 there were only 415, until 1939 Ehenfeld had again recorded a slight increase. In that year it had 425 inhabitants. With the admission of the displaced persons after the Second World War, the population rose by leaps and bounds and reached its peak in 1946 with 551 inhabitants, 25 percent of the total population being displaced persons. The population was 598 in 1995 and 634 in 1998.

religion

The religious confusion of the 16th and 17th centuries also affected Ehenfeld. It can be assumed that Ehenfeld changed faith several times. In 1628 Ehenfeld became finally Catholic. The current parish of St. Michael consists of all parts of the former parishes of Ehenfeld and Massenricht . It includes the villages of Ehenfeld, Massenricht, Kindlas, Rödlas , Obersteinbach, Untersteinbach, Träglhof , Ebenhof, Hölzlmühle and Hummelmühle with a total of around 1,100 believers. Ehenfeld is still independent as a parish, but has formed a pastoral care unit with the Hirschau parish since 2003.

Economy, education and infrastructure

education

kindergarten

In 1950 the parish of Ehenfeld opened a kindergarten, the management of which was placed in the hands of the Sisters of the Holy Cross . As early as 1960, due to the increasing number of children, the addition of a group room was necessary, which was followed by a cloakroom, washroom and toilet. Auxiliary Bishop Josef Hiltl inaugurated the new premises . From 1989 to 1991 the kindergarten building was completely renovated and rebuilt. The inauguration was carried out by Auxiliary Bishop Vinzenz Guggenberger . In 2002 another expansion became necessary. The kindergarten experienced a personnel cut in 2001 when the sisters of the Holy Cross were withdrawn from Ehenfeld. Since then, the children have been looked after by secular staff. Since 2009 there has also been lunch in the kindergarten. The kindergarten has already received the Felix award several times from the German Choir Association .

In Ehenfeld there is a primary school with two combined year classes and a total of 35 pupils (status: 2015/16 school year).
