Location of Sargmühle in Hirschau

Sargmühle is a district of the town of Hirschau in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria .

origin of the name

The place name Sargmühle originally referred to a mill standing at this point. The component "coffin" comes from the Old High German "zarga", Middle High German "zarge" and early New High German "sarg" or "sarch", which means something like "enclosure" or "border" or "side border" or "side wall". The name Sargmühle can therefore be interpreted as a mill with an enclosure (older interpretation) or after the mill tub (newer interpretation).

In the indexes of places from 1877 to 1964, in addition to the place name Sargmühle, the place name "Sägmühle" is also mentioned in brackets, which, however, appears to be incorrect when looking at the dialect expressions for the saw. For this reason the addition "Sägmühle" was canceled on August 6, 1969.

The coffin mill is mentioned as Sörgmül in the military register of the Hirschau nursing office from 1501. 1577, 1630 and 1661 can be read by von der Sorgmühl, 1723 by Sorgmüll, 1728 by Sorgmühl and finally in 1730 and 1773 by Sargmühl.
