Sexey-les-Bois is a village and a commune déléguée in the French commune of Bois-de-Haye in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). The residents call themselves Sexois .

geography

Sexey-les-Bois is three kilometers east of the Moselle , about halfway between the cities of Toul and Nancy on a wooded plateau. Forests spread north and east of Sexey-les-Bois (Bois de Namplain, Forêt Communale de Sexey-les-Bois, Fourasses de Sexey). The forests are part of the large forest area Forêt de Haye , the core of which today surrounds the city of Nancy in a semicircle. Neighboring communities of Sexey-les-Bois were Aingeray in the north, Liverdun in the northeast, Velaine-en-Haye in the east and south and Fontenoy-sur-Moselle in the west.

history

The first forerunner of the place name appeared in the Latin form Cirseio as early as 965 . It gradually developed into today's Sexey via Sessiacum in 1050, Sirceio in 1137 and Sixeyo in 1402 . In addition to Sexey-les-Bois (to distinguish it from the nearby village of Sexey-aux-Forges ), the name Sexey-en-Haie also appeared. Between 1728 and 1739, the place name Xeres au bois was found on maps from the Naudin geography workshop in Versailles . The spelling Sexey-aux-Bois still existed in 1801 .

In 1830, 300 hectares of the 681 hectares of the community area were arable, 220 hectares were forests and 25 hectares were meadows. On the eve of the French Revolution, Sexey-les-Bois was part of the Toul deanery in the diocese of Toul. The Counts of Fontenoy, administered by the priests, owned the largest estates in the parish. Two thirds of the tithe went to the abbots of the Saint-Mansuy monastery in Toul.

The red and silver divisions and the three Alérions in the coat of arms are the insignia of the Igny family as the first Count of Fontenoy: the tree symbolizes the wealth of forests, the wheat sheaf symbolizes agriculture.

The municipality of Sexey-les-Bois merged with Velaine-en-Haye on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Bois-de-Haye. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. The municipality of Sexey-les-Bois belonged to the arrondissement of Toul and the municipality of Terres Touloises .
