Sextans B is an irregular dwarf galaxy of the Ir IV-V type in the constellation Sextans .

Together with the dwarf galaxy Sextans A , it forms a pair on the outer edge of the local group . The galaxy is also showing signs of gravitational binding to the NGC-3109 subgroup .

properties

Sizes

Sextans B is located at a distance of about 1360 k pc from our solar system and is moving away from our sun at a speed of about 301 km / s . It is one of the most distant galaxies in the Local Group.

composition

The dwarf galaxy has a uniform star population , but its interstellar medium is relatively inhomogeneous. The mass of sextans B is estimated to be about 2 × 10 8 M , with a proportion of 5.5 × 10 7 M of atomic hydrogen .

Star formation

The star formation of the galaxy shows different periods of low activity, interrupted by periods of no activity. However, the existence of variable Cepheid stars in sextans B also indicates current, if only minor, star formation.

Metallicity

The metallicity of sextans B is relatively low. So far, five planetary nebulae have been identified in the dwarf galaxy. It is one of the smallest galaxies in which this could be observed so far. Due to the distance of sextans B , they appear as point sources, but can be identified based on their spectral emission lines . A massive globular star cluster could also be assigned to this dwarf galaxy .
