Seymour is a city in the Australian state of Victoria 98 km north of Melbourne . It is located in the Mitchell Shire Local Government Area and has a population of 6,063 according to the last census in 2016. The city serves as a center for the surrounding agriculture (mainly horse , cattle and sheep breeding as well as viticulture ) and the nearby Puckapunyal military base (population: 1078), on which an important training center for the Australian armed forces is located. Other important industries are retail, light engineering, agriculture, medical services, and education.

history

Seymour was founded in 1839 at the point where the road from Melbourne to Sydney (today: Hume Highway ) crosses the Goulburn River . At this point an inn was built and on July 1, 1844 the first post office opened. The railroad came along with the necessary infrastructure in 1872 and made the city an important hub in the Goulburn Valley for the Melbourne-Sydney railway line and all of Northeast Victoria. It was one of the first examples in Victoria of a railroad town , in the prime of this mode of transportation 400 railway workers were employed, together with their families nearly a third of the total city population (1500 people).

Puckapunyal Army Base

During the First World War , the Australian armed forces set up a training camp 4 km east of the city. During the Second World War , this eastern camp lost its importance and a much larger military settlement was built about 10 km to the west in Puckapunyal. Since 2008, Puckapunyal has been the Land Warfare Development Center (LWDC) of the Australian Armed Forces and Headquarters Combined Arms Training Center (HQ CATC). The HQ CATC is the headquarters of the Australian Army School of Armor (Puckapunyal), the School of Artillery (Puckapunyal), the School of Engineers (Sydney) and the School of Infantry (Singleton). In addition, there are smaller training centers and facilities in Puckapunyal, as well as a road transport squadron.

Plans by the federal government (not confirmed) are to move the School of Engineers and School of Infantry to Puckapunyal as well, thus creating a Combined Training Center of Excellence for the Australian armed forces.

Puckapunyal has extensive support units for the garrison as well as maintenance and repair facilities for service to the army units in Puckapunyal and many field depots throughout Victoria and Tasmania . Much of the civilian population in Seymour and the surrounding cities is employed by the military base. There is the Australian Army's Tank Museum , which has an excellent collection of historic and modern tanks and armored vehicles from around the world.
