The Shackleton was a British research ship .

history

The ship was built in 1955 at the Sölvesborgs Varv shipyard in Sölvesborg as a cargo ship for the Norwegian company Arendals Dampskibsselskab. The launch took place in November 1954. The ship was completed in February 1955. The ship started sailing as Arendal . In August 1955 it was bought by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) for £ 230,000 and converted for use as a polar research vessel. The deck superstructures were lengthened to the front and the hull was additionally reinforced with ice for travel in polar regions . On December 19, 1955, the ship in Southampton was renamed Shackleton - after the British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton .

The ship was used from 1955 to 1961 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and then by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) primarily for geophysical research trips in the southern polar region. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) began using the ship in 1969 . It was decommissioned in May 1983 and later sold.

On November 29, 1957, the ship was damaged in the pack ice north of Coronation Island below the waterline . The ship came to the aid of the HMS Protector and a whaling ship . Personnel not required on board were taken over by the HMS Protector . The ship was later repaired in Stromness Bay in South Georgia .

On February 4, 1976, the ship was shot at around 80  nautical miles south of Cape Pembroke on the Falkland Islands by the Argentine destroyer Almirante Storni . Contrary to instructions to call at Ushuaia , the ship continued its voyage to Port Stanley , where it arrived on the evening of the same day.

Whereabouts of the ship

In 1983 the ship was renamed Geotek Beta and 1984 Profiler . In 1992 it was converted into a seismic research vessel and renamed the Sea Profiler . In 2011 the ship was scrapped in Barrow-upon-Humber at New Holland Shipyard.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship was carried out by a four-stroke - six-cylinder - Diesel engine manufacturer's MAN (type: G6V40 / 60) on a propeller worked.

For electricity generation were three diesel generators each with 140  kW power and two diesel generators each with 65 kW power.

After construction, the ship initially had two holds , each of which was served by a crane . The deckhouse was in the rear of the ship. During the conversion to a research ship, the superstructures were extended to about the midship area . The rear cargo space was removed, the front rebuilt. After the conversion, the ship still had a crane that could operate the cargo space and deck between the foredeck and the superstructure.
